Just how important are spares?

One spare, seperated you from qualifying in the top 84, or finishing 95th and going home early.

Well, missed spares cost me a little over 100 pins at ABC, which means  I won't cash except for the Team event

Spares save your butt. Although strike in a row are fine, it is the consecutive execution of clear frames which makes you competitive even under difficult lane conditions. Even with a spare-only game, you can make a 190 maximum result.
And just lining up clear frames keeps you competitive in a tournament, putting pressure on your opponent(s) to clear the frame, too, to keep up with you when it is neck to neck.

Strikes come automatically with good technique and predictable lane conditions. But anything else is won through a strong spare game!

Do not let pesky 10s or baby splits ruin your game...

Tell me about it Bob!  Been doing far too much of that lately.  I'd rather shoot a clean 215, than a 2 open 215.  And the biggest kick in the nuts is the 215 with a split in the 9th or 10th.  Oh what coulda been...

When I was at ABC, we always bowl HoF squad.  My dad has been a delegate for years, this year he was asked to escort one of the current ABC HoF members down the center aisle.  I can't remember the guys name, but he told my dad about a guy in his league back home that shot 801 with no spares.  Games went something like Open-Sheet, Strike-Split-Sheet, Front 8 open open

I can't even hit an 800 making all of my spares....I try to practice more on my spares, since I haven't ever hit a 300, that means even my best game there was a spare shot.  BTW that game was the first attempt at switching from a resin spare ball that moved, to a plastic ball.

Spare making cost me a 600 this week in my Tuesday league. Flagging two single pins cost me 22 pins, and I also failed to take 1 of 2 pins out on a split which happened after a strike, losing another 2 pins in count. Takes away a 618 series and brings it down to 594 series quickly despite striking half the time that night...

I'm pretty sure I missed the first ABC Masters cut because of second day spares. I was 156 after day one and ended up 292. I'd say their importance is beyond discussion.

Spares are one of the most important things in bowling. Strings of strikes are nice but we cant always sting 4 or 5 ina row so to keep your scores as high as possible during lane transitions you need spares.

Spares are THE most important part of this game; cover your spares and the strikes will take care of themselves. Besides, screwing up on easy spares costs you not only pins but shakes your confidence and distracts from you mental game.
