Recently bowled a tourney that runs 4-5 weeeknds throughout Feb. Looked at the standings so far and saw an astronomical AE Hdcp total leading the tourney. How high is too high? He is listed at a 192avg and shot 2303 scratch AE, 2592 with hdcp.

The second place guy is just as bad though. 2391 with a 161 average? Sure pal.
Of course, it depends on what the handicap was based on too, but this is why I stay away from handicap tournaments.
-
I know this, 2592 qualifies as "too high".
For someone that bowls scratch like me, that's a 288 average. Now, I'm confident in myself and I'm a pretty damn good bowler, but I doubt I got 2592 scratch in me, TBH. :-X
-
192 average goes off to average 256 in 9 games...that's really hard to believe and even the guy in 2nd with 161 averaged pretty much 211.
just like milo, this is why I avoid handicap

Now . . I've seen a 190 bowler shoot 800. I've never seen a 160 average bowler shoot 690.

Of course a 190 bowler can shoot 800. But three times? And two of them back to back in doubles/singles? Nope, sorry I ain't buying it.

I'll be bowling state next week with my worst average since my Junior days of 182. I hope to throw something astounding so I can hear all the sandbagging comments!

Well let me be the first. SANDBAGGER!! :)
Just in case none of us get the chance after you bowl. But good luck in the tournament.

I've seen a 190 "book average" bowler shoot 800. It's called sandbagging.
I have never seen a 190 bowler shoot 800 and I never will.
These 2 top qualifiers should be eliminated on the basis of sandbagging by the very essence of their scores. It is IMPOSSIBLE for "bowlers" (and I use the word advisedly) to shoot those scores. People who have those qualifications are, b their very definition, incapable of being that consistent AND that lucky at the same time.
Let's face reality -
In today's game with today's balls and today's pins and today's side panels, are lucky to carry 10 strikes if they hit the pocket dead flush, VERY LUCKY!

i am participating in this tournament this weekend, i have been bowling in this event the last 5 years, and the scoring is pretty high, they had 10 300's last weekend. The shot and the carry is pretty darn good. i know they make you have your assoc. secretary verify your avg and handicap if you shoot a certain amount over your average. i'm not suprised by this score being shot, i am a 200 avg bowler, and i have never shot a 800, 781 is my personal best without a 300.

it's rough, I'm 204 average and still I get accused of bagging.... people be profile'n just because I'm Asian???? lol
Seriously though......most likely, it'll take more tourney's before #1 and #2 get re-rated....

Come on Jay, it's not just because you're Asian. It's because you're Asian AND you bowl. Especially if you beat me! :)
In the LVT at Granada bowl last year, Tom re-rated a bowler after his first three games. Dude had like a 170 something and ended with a 913 with handicap. Tom let the score stand, but the guy had to use the re-rate average for the other six games.

I just checked it, he was a 166 avg. And guess what? Only one league on his Bowl.com profile with just 24 games, of course, that was probably his Jan 1, 2014 average.
Na, no need to doubt how legit he was.
He is listed at the top of the Men's singles on this one: http://www.granadabowl.com/Portals/0/Documents/LVT_Page2.pdf

I disagree with most of this. I bowl on wood lanes covered by old overlays, average around 200 in multiple leagues, and when I leave my house, and go to synthetics I tear it up. I averaged 243 for 6 games on the second day of state last year. I moved 1/2 board in 6 games. At my house I move 1 to 3 after game one, and the same after game two, and usually 1-2 during the last game.
I love synthetics, and find it easier to shoot high scores on them. It may be like that for others, or they could be sandbaggers also.
Just my two cents

243 is pretty good, and say you averaged that for 9 games, this guy still would have beat you by 150....scratch, probably 250 with wood. How would you feel about it then?

On a similar note, The Virginia State Bowling Tournament has turned into a total joke. About 5 years ago, they switched the format to 100% handicap of 230. There are two divisions (Above/below 180). For 4 years running there have been 900's in singles with handicap. As high as 924. One year there were 2 900+ singles series with handicap. It is the ultimate SandBag Fest now.
100% handicaps promotes people to bowl at the lowest average possible. As a sport in ENCOURAGES people to be worse, not better, to get rewarded. Talk about a mistake.
