Broke my back, anyone else?
« on: February 08, 2015, 10:58:29 AM »
So two weeks ago today I had a rather nasty wipeout on the slopes and suffered a compression fracture of T7. Finally got a doctor appointment this past week and he basically doesn't want me doing anything physical (I.e., bowling) for at least 6 weeks post-injury which is when my follow up X-ray will be.

Anyone come back from a similar type injury? How long until you felt comfortable throwing again? Any thoughts or helpful hints for recovery?

I'm 48 but have a pretty high pain tolerance. I finished the run and drove 80 miles home before going to ER. First priority was getting my son home. He'd to talk the ski patrol out of carting me down and visiting the first aid shack.

I'm thinking of starting to swing my Bowling Buddy swing trainer starting this time next week.

I hit a mogul wrong and did serious damage to my shoulder a few years ago. I didnt do anything about it, which was probably a poor decision, but its fine now. I did finish bowling the season after, and it hurt like  $#@!. I was scared about doing any surgery because a friend of mine said his aunt had gotten rotator cuff surgery and it never healed properly. A different injury I guess, but it worked out OK.

Wow, in the long run I'm thinking I'd rather have my injury than a blown out shoulder.

Allow me to ask a more direct question, would it seem to make sense to start back with a lighter weight ball?  Would dropping down to 14 or even 13 make much of a difference in regard to back stress?

I have a couple of my son's old bowling balls at both weights that I could plug and redrill. So it wouldn't be that onerous to do.

I did not break my back, so I did not answer your first post.  I did have a ruptured disc that started to press on the nerves and caused severe leg pain so that I had trouble walking/standing.  Had surgery to remove the rupture.  After surgery, the doctor told me not to do anything strenuous and avoid lifting until the stitches healed.  After that, when I started physical therapy, I asked him about bowling and he said I could start bowling again but with a light ball.  I bowled with a 13# ball for about a month or so then was allowed to return to 15#.

I would talk more with the doctor and follow his suggestions.  He's seen those type of injuries before and would know what you can and should not do.  Patients who do not follow their doctor's suggestions are usually the ones who have the most problems afterwards.

I felt something in my back pop while bowling in July of 2013. I went to DR and he had me do some back exercises. It helped a wee bit momentarly and then got worse. I tried backbraces, and etc. Finally went to a back specialist DR in Oct and a CT Scan showed 2 fractured vertabrae. Back specialist DR did surgery by injecting some type plastic or something in both places of fractured  vertabrae. He said no bowling and limited me to 10# of lifting for 2 months. He then put me on 12# balls and said if I went back to 14-15 lb balls, that I would be back for more surgery. I then threw 12# balls from Jan 2014 to Oct of 2014 (with way better success than I ever imagined) at which time I have since gone up a lb to 13# balls.

Thank you for relating your experiences.  Without question it will be a topic of discussion with the Dr when I go for my follow-up appointment/x-ray in early march.  Sounds like my thinking is on the right track though.  I think I will avoid selling any more of my son's cast-offs until I get official word.  Then the switch would only cost me plug and re-drill.

I burst my L2 disc in my back 8 years ago.  They replaced the whole disc in my back then.  I'm back bowling and can bowl 10 game tournaments now.  The best thing to do is not push the issue and build the strength back up.  My L1, L2, and L3 still have a cage around them now.
