What is up with my release?
« on: March 10, 2005, 06:09:00 AM »
Well I've been trying to learn different lines and learn to use forward roll blah blah so...anyway on to my question. Why is it that when I bend my wrist BACKWARDS at the pushaway and keep it straight in the downswing I come out so much smoother and with so many more revs then than with a cupped wrist? (considering my thumb gets out). When I cup my wrist I get tons of side roll and the ball thuds loudly at release and to simplify it, my release sucks with a cupped wrist. I know I am smaller and such but why exactly does my release suck with a cupped wrist? It sucks with a straight wrist to because I am flat out not that good but geez...Anyone think they know?

At a random guess, purely off the top of my head, you might be releasing the ball on the upswing when you cup.  That is, you may be actually releasing the ball past your ankle, rather than in the flat spot at the bottom of the swing.

Also, sounds like your gripping the ball when you cup your wrist, so your thumb is hanging. I'm the same way, I dont cup my wrist. My wrist is too weak to cup it, so I drop the ball and get lower revs because Im using all my strength just to keep it cupped.

That might be it, I squeeze the ball so my thumb probably doesn't get out when it needs to, hence my little loft and the stupid thud. I've also think I figured out that I turn the ball to early, need to keep my hand behind the ball longer but it is not easy. Um..sorry to ask another question but how do you prevent from bending too much at the waist? I KNOW I do this and it loses my a lot of speed and revs. I normally have a deep knee bend and bend at the waist so I do fall off more shots than I should. How do you keep from bending too much? Anyone know? Thanks in advance.

Hex - Like you, I'm always trying to improve.  Last year my coaches broke me of the cupped-wrist-and-loft (aka "hitting up") in favor of the "open hand" release (ie, uncupping the wrist at release).  The simple reason I believe in the open hand release is that, for me, it is very repeatable.  The amount of cup-and-loft is not.

Why does it generate more revs?  It doesn't for everyone.  For you and me and many other bowlers, it does.  I can't give you the exact reason, but an investigation of John Jowdy's book "Bowling Execution" might shed some light on the subject for you.  Personally, I believe I get more revs with the open hand release because it allows me to rotate the ball faster and closer to the release point.  When my forearm and wrist muscles are all tense in an effort to keep the "cup" at release, I can not rotate the ball as quickly or as much at the release point.

Hey,

If it comes out smoother w/ out the cup do it.  I used to have a cupped wrist but i have desided to stop.  b/c the only cuping that matters is side to side not up and down, (unless your Jim Pratt).  b/c turning your wrist to the left is going to make your wrist come around the ball more and the straiter your wrist the less you will come around.  Hope this makes sence.  doesn't matter much but i have around 425 RPMs of the hand and 19 mph w/ a flat wrist at start and i only ajust side to side to control the axis of rotation (the direction it goes of the break point). but i have a hard time when i try to cup it.
