From what I see on the weekends, the alleys have not suffered much by way of loss in open bowling customers. Friday and Saturday cosmic bowling you have to wait at least an hour for a lane. Of course, they always have some sort of marketing gimmick going, but the place stays crowded and they sale plenty of beer. If the alleys are suffering as a result of a drop-off in league bowlers, that is their own doing and just reward for not doing enough to keep the league regulars bowling. I have plenty of complaints that I could make about league bowling, but none of them are at the operators, as they treat us pretty good and seem to really appreciate our business.
On Sunday night, our league takes up about half of the center and most of the time there is a wait for a lane on the remaining half. All of the major houses are crowed like this on the weekend, and they all treat their league bowlers about the same. The one privately owned house charges 1.50 to 2.50 per game for league bowlers, but that is the highest in town.
I think that the alleys should charge what is necessary for them to make a decent profit. Requiring payment for 35 or 36 weeks does not seem extreme to me, even if you choose to bowl only 32 weeks.
