What is wrong with the Leagues?
« on: April 30, 2010, 02:26:14 AM »
Too often I get on here and see that people are complaining about USBC and how they take awards away. I agree 100%. That is why there is talk about Leagues going unsanctioned Next year. What is the purpose anymore of having a sanctioned League? I want to know what people think would help Bowling. Do We need to go unsanctioned? Do We need better centers? My center gives a 10% Discount on Drinks, Etc, but thats it. Lanes are different every week. Manager has no idea what She is doing. And it is a AMF House. Give Me Your ideas that will help get people into Leagues? How can We get the numbers up?

fIND SPONSORS FOR YOUR LEAGUE TO ADD TO THE PRIZE MONEY. MORE MONEY FOR PRIZE FUND MORE PEOPLE JOINING LEAGUE. MAKE SURE THE FIRST PLACE PRIZE IS MUCH HIGHER THAN THE REST ALSO IF YOU GET SPONSORS.

USBC has little to do with it.  It is the bowling centers, plain and simple.  Lineage being raised every year and the quality of service remains the same.  The centers have to want the leagues too.  If they dont, then bowlers will go elsewhere or take up another hobby (Golf, Tennis).

I bowl in a league with 18 teams that if we win all 3 thirds and the roll off, we get a grand total of $250.00 per man.  But we spend $540.00 for the 36 weeks to bowl.  That wont attract anybody.  Win everything and LOSE $300.00???

I think it should go back to when the house sanctions the league. In my opinion USBC is just taking what little money is left in bowling, I shot a 300 in a local non sanctioned tounament and got a really nice trophey better than any of my rings.

If you do not need a certified average (you never bowl tournaments) or your secretary/treasurer is absolutely trustworthy (or your center will guarantee the prize fund), then you do not need to sanction.  Many senior leagues are non-sanctioned.  Most of the seniors do not bowl tournaments and the prize funds are usually so small, it is not worth stealing.

Our 36 week leagues around here pay pretty good. One paid 7500 to the first place team. The other 5000. We came in third and took 1500, as both third and fourth paid 1500.

Everyone wants the three hundred ring. I don't know that anyone in our Sunday night league would be happy with a trophy.

League member rate for open bowling is 99 cents per game, as opposed to 4-6 bucks per game. We pay $21 per week to bowl, but if you win a quarter and do o.k. in the roll off, you bowl for pretty much for free. All in all, I think it is a fair trade.

Same thing with our scratch league here. And I too would much rather have a 300/800 ring than a trophy or plaque.

I was using a trophy as an example, alot of houses around here use to give out coats and other prizes.

The League I am in is 32 Weeks. It ended last night. It is nice to have the rest of the Summer now. All Leagues should shorten up. A Center where I bowled at previously said the League had to pay for 35 weeks even if they only Bowl 32. Do You think that is right? I don't.

Well hey my BW Sting just came in the mail today, how's that for a topic? Haha. Just need to figure out a good drilling.

And hey let's not forget about the economy. It's so bad right now that I've noticed many leagues at my house had been cut down by at least 50% of teams. One league use to have 36 to 40 teams (full house with waiting lists) but now it's down to less than 20 teams. People can't afford to bowl in leagues nowadays, and possibly neither can some bowling centers afford leagues. I bowl in a late night second shift league that started with 14 teams, now we're less than 10 teams, not to mention plenty of vacancies.

And lucky for you guys and your league bowling discounts. At my center we only get $1 off per game as league bowler, paying $22 a week for 30+ weeks of league play, and it's still $3 to $5 a game! Brunswick corporations are such huge rip-offs.

From what I see on the weekends, the alleys have not suffered much by way of loss in open bowling customers. Friday and Saturday cosmic bowling you have to wait at least an hour for a lane.  Of course, they always have some sort of marketing gimmick going, but the place stays crowded and they sale plenty of beer. If the alleys are suffering as a result of a drop-off in league bowlers, that is their own doing and just reward for not doing enough to keep the league regulars bowling. I have plenty of complaints that I could make about league bowling, but none of them are at the operators, as they treat us pretty good and seem to really appreciate our business.

On Sunday night, our league takes up about half of the center and most of the time there is a wait for a lane on the remaining half. All of the major houses are crowed like this on the weekend, and they all treat their league bowlers about the same. The one privately owned house charges 1.50 to 2.50 per game for league bowlers, but that is the highest in town.

I think that the alleys should charge what is necessary for them to make a decent profit. Requiring payment for 35 or 36 weeks does not seem extreme to me, even if you choose to bowl only 32 weeks.
