What is your handicap based off?
« on: May 06, 2009, 06:27:54 AM »
Last season, my Thursday league had 1 bowler average 230, 5 in the 220's, a good amount hovering around 210 and I think low average was about 150.  Well, prior to that season, handicap was based off 225.  The league secretary wanted it raised to 230 all because of the one bowler.

Again this year, we had 1 guy at 230 (a different bowler) a few people in the 220's, etc.  I think that basing it off 230 is too high.  How do you determine what the handicap should be based off?  High average, maybe an average of the top 5?

Handicap should be based on par, just like golf.  I'm pretty sure that "par" in bowling is 200.  If you have bowlers that are throwing too high above par, it's time to make the "course" a little tougher.

I would have to say that there is no one formula used around my area. Over the past two years, I bowled at a house where it was 90% of 200 and any averages over received negative handicap (to be fair on being out of 200, there was only one person over 200 at this house...not going to mention any names ) and another that was 90% of 240 because the averages were so high.

My personal favorite though, negates the individual and just places it on the team as a whole. The team average coming into the season cannot exceed 1100. After that, every week is based on the team average at 90% of 1500. The team who has the higher starting average has no handicap for that week, and the difference is put into play.

I am the secretary of a Men's Handicap league, and we use 90% of 230, we don't have anybody averaging 230, but we got a few at 220+ so it makes things interesting when you as a team are giving up a lot of sticks.
But for the most part there is a good reason why this or that person is getting that many sticks

in my two main leagues, handicap is based on the difference of the 2 teams' averages.  monday nite is 90% of the difference, tuesday nite is 85%.

it's a simple system, and gives the lower average team a chance to win.  monday nites, we usually give 150+ pins per game, and the end result is that we have to fight to win the league.  it's competititve, but ultimately the best should still rise to the top.

The league I bowl in voted in 90% of 230 last year because they felt threatened in brackets by two high average bowlers. They end up not bowling this year and I am high in the league at 227. Personally, I feel it's insane that I get 2 pins handicap a game.

MOst leagues around here are 90% of 220 . Are mixed league is changing to 90%of 230 because of some high average bowlers. Average handicap doesn't really matter just depends on who complains. If ur in a league were it is 230 plus its mainly to give lower average bowlers a chance. You figure a high average bowler like Crankenstein300 stated will get 2 pins while the lower end will get 20 more pins. It sounds crazy but it works.  For every 10 pins the league average goes up high end gets 1 pin and low end gets 10

A couple of the leagues that I bowl in don't have any individual handicaps.
The handicap is based on 80% of the difference between the 2 teams averages.
Seems very fair.

Many tournaments around here use 200 as a reference and calculate a percentage handycap from the player's official average acording to his/her player pass - No handycap at all if the official average is above 200.

My last tournament used a 75% bonus, based on a 200 benchmark, but I have attended another last year where a full 100% average was applied to support players with a good daily form.

It seems many are looking at the actual word "handicap" and not what is is actually used for in bowling.  It does not mean you are handicapped.

Handicap is used to level the playing field.  There is a difference between a bowler averaging 230 and a bowler averaging 200. I have this same conversation in league meetings every year.  If a 200 average is giving pins to a 170 average, why wouldn't a 230 average give pins to a 200 average.

Regardless of what handicap is based on, when using the 90% system, the higher average will still win most of the time.

200 is not par.
