What is Your THS?
« on: January 21, 2010, 02:31:58 AM »
I think most of us here agree that most houses are putting out easy THS.  But yet I read posts that a lot of bowlers cannot throw the strong equipment on their leagues.

I read that houses are combating the hook of the month with more oil, but a lot of bowlers are throwing older milder equipment.

So which is it?

My house here put''s out a dryer THS which requires me to play with my Pink Hammer on occassion.  Why because the manager likes em dry so he can score well.

What''s the shot in your area?  Wet or dry?

My THS is... both. Very wet/dry. Plenty of volume, with squeaky clean backends.
I do the best with older equipment laid out strong, something that picks up a roll midlane. Playing straighter, around second arrow, because for me thats where I have the most area and the least over/under.

THS whats that? o you mean the pattern they put out like 2 days before i bowl and after the high school bowlers tear it up with some throwing plastic some VG''s ? hahaha

so the place i bowl at is dry, dirty, whatever. every day is a bit different.

but i think many places have an easy wet shot out.

pretty much little oil across the entire lane so I would call it a flat pattern

depends on the day at my center, on wednesdays im at 215, on thursdays im at 207. with the 215, i am 3rd highest average for the whole center, not one bowler averaging over 220. the shot normally is tight with no friction outisde of board 6, anything swung out past 6 is skid city. it forces you to keep your breakpoint around 8-10, and straighter to start. part that sucks is once it breaks down to the point you have to do a 2-1 move, the ball wont turn the corner. it forces you to stay in the same area and adjust your speed.

Ours has a ton of volume inside and squeaky out near the ditch. What to throw just depends on who else is on your pair and what angle works that day. Have shot 765 with a Granite Gargoyle going 18 to 5 and 725 with a Yellow Dot playing 7 to 4.

my house shot is a real gem lol
old wood house hasnt been screened in 8 years he strips the lanes once a week and to oil sends the century 100 down the lane to 39 feet twice the shot changes every night we bowl

Both. My average has went down by 10 pins this year because of the different patterns that been out but mostly because of errors on my part. But I did find that there are other bowlers beside myself in my leagues that are stuggling this year, expecially if they oiled the lanes but left the carrydown on the backend from last night's league.

my THS is usually left overs from whatever was laid out during the day. It usually has some open play on one/both of the lanes this includes bumper bowling.

the track is usually blown open. the only option is to play around it. i have a C300 power torq with the pin above my middle finger, cg kicked way right, flare reducing hole @2000 grit that ignores the front 30'' of the lane the arcs smoothly off the backend. i play 8 at the arrows to 5 at 43''. all i have to do is get the ball to the break point and hope it don''t carry down. any oil at all, no hook for you. once it carries down i can move to the other side of the track with a C300 prohook (label leverage pin in grip center @2000 grit+polish) and play 15 at the arrows to 8 at 43''. if my carry suffers and i cannot seem to get the ball through the heads, i switch to a c300 messenger b/s/p (pin under fingers in bridge, cg kicked right, weight hole on axis @2000 grip+lots of polish). the b/s/p lets me get way left and wheel it. like 5th arrow!

most of the time the torq and prohook are the way to go for this league. i just need to work one making spares. i have chris barnes syndrome.

Moderate oil in the middle with lighter oil towards the gutter until you get to the 5 board. 5 to the gutter is OB with heavy oil. Average backends.

Use to be OB from 8 to the gutter with heavy oil and very little backends. Which means if you got it just past 10 it wasn't coming back, and if you played more direct it still wouldn't recover. Not a good house for players who like to hook the ball or had any ball speed.

Now it is much easier and you can throw any ball and play almost any line and reach the pocket.

My house shot is a dry and spotty reverse block from 10 board and out..
The reason, cause the owner is a cheapskate, the manager doesn''t know how to run a bowling alley, and the mechanic doesn''t know how to run or fix a machine...

If you are a righty and swing it, better stay left of 10 to be safe.. you might get away with 8 but you better have the right speed, hand, and ball..

Don''t expect your ball to do the same thing twice if you play the outside...

Come to Starz Recreation in Vacaville, CA and tell Ernie and Bill how $hi++y their house and lanes are...

My house's THS is a seasonal top hat style pattern.

Winter time is when all the high school kiddies mess up the lane and the track area.  All the oil man does is run a coat of oil down 38 feet, doesn't bother cleaning or striping the lanes, just a coat of oil.  What happens is that the friction is still there and the lanes just break down so quick (by frame 9 of the 1st game), so that by the third game you have to be inside 3rd arrow unless you throw the ball 20+ just to stay on the right side.  In the summer, the same kind of thing happens, but it usually doesn't happen till the 3rd game.  Spring and Fall the lanes are usually nice.  A speed sensitive shot from 12 out to 8 should do the trick and lead to good scores.  Almost every night though there is a lot of oil inside from about 17 - 23 and your ball can get stuck there going for cross lane spares, so you have to be careful or learn to shoot straight at them.

I think medium in the middle, less outside.  9 board and out being the same or close, because if I miss right and it ends up outside 5 I never know what's gonna happen.  Not the easiest shot in the world for me but it seems to be a result of my style since others can take more advantage of it than me.

I am really happy with the THS the alley I bowl at puts down. In the last few years I gone through 3 houses, the first was just a ridiculous wet/dry, insanely easy shot... the second house had a OOB but there was still a lot of hold in the middle of the lane, so as long as you stayed off the OOB you would score... the house I've been with now puts out a great shot IMO, no hold inside at all, medium/heavy oil and a small OOB... really puts an emphasis on shot making although it is not quiet as hard as a sport shot, but for a THS is great.
