What kind of mentality...
« on: September 19, 2008, 01:23:03 AM »
...does it take to buy a bowling ball new, throw it for 10 or 20 games, and then decide that its not worth it?  I was just browsing through the For Sale section, and I just noticed this trend (which I'm sure has been going on for quite some time).

For those of you who are guilty of this particular infraction, why do you do it?  Do you try any coverstock modifications before giving up on it, or do you just expect the OOB condition to dictate how you play your game?  Are you a member of a ball of the month club?

This phenonmenon is particularly fascinating to me because I don't believe that I have bought a new ball (or probably used, for that matter) and put less han 100 games on it before I will officially decide that it doesn't suit me.  I try coverstock modifications, I throw the ball at many different alleys with different conditions (you'd be amazed how dead a ball can seem on synthetic and how much snap it can have on wood, and vice versa), and maybe even a redrill to get a different reaction.  In fact, I don't have a ball in my bag that's newer than about 1.5 years old.  I understand the need to update equipment, but when I see postings for a ball that just came out last week, it baffles me...  Any other thoughts?

I always assume that it has more games on it then stated.  There is really no way to prove otherwise.

I don't buy new balls right when the come out. I do alot of research before I buy so that when I get a new ball I know exactly what I want out of that ball. Thus I use it for years before I get rid of it.

I am member of the ball of the month club and sometimes I try various cover alterations, alot of times a new piece of gear over laps another ball that I really like in that case I will get rid of the newer one first because the older one is more proven in my eyes.

Do professional events still have rules on redrills?  My driller used to get a ton of Ozio's old equipment and then sell them used in his shop.  It seemed once a year, there would be 25-30 new "used" balls in his shop most with what appears to be minimum games.  And since Ozio can't redrill, they become expendable.

160 hours and STILL without power!!!

Personally, the only ball I've decided I didn't want anymore was after I tried 2 different layouts, with 4-5 different surfaces on each and finally just gave up and handed it to my dad (who loves it and rolls it great, I'm almost jealous). I like to try different layouts though (my Bite is on its third drill, probably going to its 4th or being replaced soon).

I definitely understand that particular point of view, and why pros swap out equipment that quickly.  That said, David Ozio isn't on here posting balls for sale...

No. You can use plugged equipment in any PBA event. It still has to spec out if weighed. Our region director verified this at the last event in Ft. Wayne about a month ago.

I do it because I like to try out all sorts of bowling balls. However, since I really have room for about 18 balls at any given time (meaning--the amount of room my wife allows me to have!!) I sell the ones that I don't see myself using very often. I'll give you an example. I recently sold a Dimension and a Cell. Why? Well, first is the room issue, but mostly because I have other bowling balls that are similar that I like better. (in this case my BuzzBomb) Sometimes I sell a ball because I just can't find a condition that it fits. These don't happen often but the Special Agent, being a particle hybrid-an unusual combination, just doesn't do anything for me.

For me it's a hobby, and I have the disposable income to allow me to try out whichever balls I'd like. It's just fun to try out any ball that I want to try.

If you see one of my auctions on e-bay (michaelinflorida) you can have complete confidence in the amount of games that a ball has been used. I use a spreadsheet to track ALL ball usage. Since I rarely use a ball for more than 30-40 games, and many of my auctions are for balls with less than 3 games, my games used information is 100% accurate.

At one time I had the philosophy that if a ball didn't pay for itself in 30 days it was time to try something else.  Most of the time they did.  I played with surfaces and messed with them a bit but usually I knew if the thing was not going to work.
