What kind of person are you????
« on: July 27, 2003, 05:05:25 PM »
Are you a loner or a group-type or somewhere in between?
Now do you consider yourself a team bowler, individual bowler, or somewhere in between?

Somewhere in between/ team

I find this interesting .. how many people will talk about themselves.

I think I'm a groupie. Like to have people around. I've entered tournaments by myself but always make friends quickly. Like to talk .. sometimes too much .. enjoy the company of others!

I am sort of standoffish in a group I don't really know.  I rely very heavily on myself and because of this I find it hard to open up to others.  Once the conversation is there and I find that somebody is my type of person though look out I will talk up a storm and be crazy and have a lot of fun.  So, I guess I am sort of inbetween.  I like bowling team related events, but because of my lack of experience I am sometimes more comfortable in a singles situation as my lack of knowledge in a certain situation would on be hurting me.

Card pretty much summed it up for me also. I am a little stand offish until I get to know someone, them I am fine. I think I am this way because of my work history. I have always had jobs (except of the furniture store I owned) Where I work alone, an usually alone through out the day everyday. Now I have a heat and air company, but still with that I interact with others for a short time, and me knowing exactly what I am talking about helps. I guess my people skills are getting rusty.

I am a bit of both. I like the companionship of teammates and having fun with others, but at the same time I am bowling for myself and to help my team win of course.

I enjoy both types of competition - team and individual. I would have to say it'd be very hard for me to pick which I like better - but probably individual just a little more than team. Of course, team competition depends on the team!
I started a tournament organization, and do all the promotion, so I guess you'd have to call me outgoing (even though I still hold back more than I should).

Pretty much the same as Card, but a Bones said I know that others see me as really outgoing.  Example, I knew every league member's names. Others see us as a "fun" team to bowl.  My teammates, who were returners to the league, kept saying that they were having fun and getting to know people because I really changed the dynamics of the team.  So, while I think I'm quiet, others see a different me.

Me,
Just like some of you,I too, kinda do the team player thing and part time loner aka "leave me alone I'm trying ta bowl".Its a 50-60 thing with me though.
I've noticed one thing for sure when you bowl by yourself and
all of a sudden, you're throwing not one,not two,but seven strikes in a row.
I'm VERY SURE this has happen to some of you, even when you bowl a perfect game as well.
The people around you come out of nowhere an take notice.Yep strangers start talking to you, asking like how ya throw this way?Umm,ur,a,how long have ya bowled for? Many questions then the "ice" is broken from lonelyville wheter you asked for it or not. This is one of the strange ways I've ended up meeting so many people in the last 2 years. Also, like 2 days later and you get five splits in a row on a particular game, that does it too!People watch people, especially when you're bowling good or bad!!!
These examples and being the Bowling Ball Fairy, because I give away bowling balls at least 2 per month to strangers(another story-post,oooopppps)!!
Also as a team thing the feeling of spot competition is a mental high!I compete every now and then too,it good for the bowling soul. Its also fun to see where you stand in the local bowling scene.

Moral to this post;I bowl a bit more by myself than teaming it,but if someone talks to me or wants to bowl.I'll let em join in and be a cool to them.
If no one asks anything,I'll just bowl by myself,no biggie.

Nuff typed,I know more will follow.

Depends on how I'm bowling.  Before league I like talking to a bunch of people, horsing around, joking etc.  Once we start bowling though, if things are clicking well and I'm shooting halfway decent to exceptional I will still joke, kid, and talk with people.  However, if I'm struggling, I want to be left alone (to an extent) so I can concentrate and figure out what's going on - whether it be a tough lane condition or (more likely) mechanical flaws in my game.  Once that's figured out and I'm back on track I'll open up again.

Not saying I like total exclusion in that situation, as I don't mind people still cracking jokes - it's just that I won't be.  And the only thing I will be discussing is "what am I doing" or "what is working for you" type of stuff to get it figured out.

When I am bowling, i tend to be all by myself. This pretty much keeps me away from the demons that can mess around with your head as you bowl. I can talk to a spectator or something and they bring something up that can all of a sudden cause you to tense up... So that's why I can be a quiet person... especially in singles tournaments.

In team tournaments, you have to support your team. You have to talk to each other constantly... because they are your other set of eyes. If you talk to another competitor in a singles tournament, they are not your second pair of eyes. They are there to beat you.

Support your team if you're on a team. Support yourself when you're by yourself.

I don't mind bowling team events as long as my team is consistent (or better than consistent).  I bowled on 2 leagues last year.  One team had a member that showed up occasionally, two that always showed up late (husband/wife pair) and one that could throw a 250 at you one game, and a 150 at you the next.  I usually shot low to mid 600 with occasional bad nights.  I hated bowling with that team because I never knew what to expect.

The other team was comprised of one guy who usually shot 650 or better, two who normally shot low to mid 600, one who normall put up 550 or better and myself who normally put up 625-700.  I loved bowling with that team because it was very predictable.

I hate doubles events.  Every doubles tournament I've been in has been with a partner who, despite earlier respectable showings, was either unable or unwilling to adjust to the shot.  Most memorable was a tournament in which the lane man must have been playing a joke.  I swear the lanes were oiled to the backstops.  I found a shot playing the twig with creep speed and as much rev as I could accurately generate.  My partner, however, had one speed andnver tried a different ball.  He just knew that his Adrenaline was going to hook because it did everywhere else he bowled.  I've never seen so many washouts and light splits in my life.  I think he shot 510 or something to my 622.  At least I won my bracket and collected some cash for that.

In singles, I will pat you on the back during qualifying, but once it comes down to elimination, you are not my friend until the match is over.  And I will be as PDW like as I can get.  In your face, Hulk Hogan flexing, even an occasional crotch-chop.  Singles are fun, IMO.

That's just me.
