Aside from practice.....any way to get your release smooth and consistent ?  Any tips you've heard ?

Thanks.......

If you have a truly relaxed, gravity-controlled armswing and your grip is correct (span and pitches) and thumb hole is adjusted for today's thumb and humidity, your hand's release can hardly be anything but smooth & consistent.

I'm wondering if my lateral pitch is totally correct, because, if I have a touch lateral pitch, maybe this is causing this ?  So, if I'm at 1/8th now, I'm not 100% sure of my totaly grip stats....but if I'm at 1/8th and I should be at zero...that could cause me to be inconsistent with a smooth release...yes ?

BUMP...I'd like to update this post briefly. Got ahold of my driller and we spoke about consistency of release and such....then I asked him about my thumb coodinates.

I'm 1/4 reverse? (away from fingers right ?) 1/8 lateral.  Well, in another post I saw Lucky Left post about the Coke Bottle test and according to that, I should be at ZERO for lateral.  My driller also said that most people are 3/8 reverse, I'm only 1/4.

What coordinate allows you to hang onto the ball better...fwd/rev OR lateral?

Because it's just a slug and we're not at the Fall season yet, I think I'm going to give a lateral change a shot and see if I come out of the ball smoother and more consistently.....

Any thoughts ?
Thanks for all help!

Well.....in other discussions, and with some research from the 'search' function.....I found a bunch of info and I've had one of my balls done with zero lateral instead of 1/8th.  I kept my 1/4 reverse, just went to zero for lateral.

Not sure if this is enough to make a difference....only a few games will see.

Reverse gets you out of the ball quicker.

Just think in extremes. If you had a lot of forward your thumb would be bent back towards your palm causing you to hang on to the ball.

Lateral which way. Left lateral in general (for right handers) keep your thumb in longer and your hand more behind the ball. Right lateral in general will help you rotate the ball and exit a little quicker.

"Just think in extremes. If you had a lot of forward your thumb would be bent back towards your palm causing you to hang on to the ball."

It all depends on how flexible your thumb is and how much bevel.

"Lateral which way. Left lateral in general (for right handers) keep your thumb in longer and your hand more behind the ball. Right lateral in general will help you rotate the ball and exit a little quicker."

Right handers: Left lateral = early exit
Right lateral (under palm) = more side turn

Most people would agree you must have a relax arm swing. I noticed that is not a very easy thing to do. I'm thinking that I need more revs grip the ball a little bit tighter lock those fingers into the holes. What happens is I don't get more revs my swing is forced and I leave another weak corner pin or I leave a pocket splits. I'm thinking whats up with that? What I noticed that if I squeeze my grip I have an inconsistent release with an inconsistent carry. So I now relax my grip and my arm swing is freer and try to have a softer release. The ball rolls off my hand, ball gets into a roll and its more consistent. Now  I can also read the lanes better and make better adjustments. Basically I have removed a lot of tension from my swing and the tension problem was in my grip. I'm stroker type player so the grip it and rip it theory doesn't worker for me. Try it and see if you notice a difference with your rev rate and see if your carry improves. It has helped me in the last month or so.

Look at the power players that muscle the swing and have pure releases.  It is really about relaxing your hand and in order to do that, you obviously need to have a good fit that allows the ball to stay on your hand while it is relaxed.  This is very evident with the trend toward using less reverse.  I used to use a tremendous amount of reverse back in the old days (pre-reactives), anywhere from 1/2" - 5/8".  I have shortened my span a little, but I now use 1/8" reverse and could probably use 0 with a slight span adjustment.  I took the gradual route cutting back 1/8" at a time over six months to get where I am now.  It took a while to get used too, but your release will be much cleaner and more consistent if you just learn to relax your hand.

Just my two cents...

Jeff,

I would have to disagree with that.  Unless he meant that most people with your span, thumb length and hand flexibility have that measurement.  I would have another driller double check your hand (for kicks)......

Just to update.  I had a suggestion to just have more bevel in my thumb.  Now, I already have a bevel, but now, I have a super smooth bevel.  While I haven't thrown with it yet...I can tell you right now it feels better already and should be the ticket.......I'll report back.

Thanks to those who respond/responded to my PM inquiries !!
