Title: What line would you play?
Post by: DerHornen on November 20, 2007, 06:09:08 AM
Here's a hypothetical:

You're halfway through the second game of a second shift league, and the lanes are really broken down.  Your normal equipment is forcing you to play a deep swing and the pattern is so broken up that it's a hero or zero situation.  Either the ball drives right through the pocket and sends ten to the pit or you miss it altogether, with a good chance of splits or multiple pin spares.  If you're really hitting your mark and are dead on with your speed you might be able to string some together.

The only weaker ball you have available is a urethane or plastic ball.  That ball is giving you a consistent read, but you're not carrying the corners very well.  You can probably grind out a decent game, but it won't be a great one.

Which ball do you throw in this situation?

Go urethane and straighter or open it up and opverpower the condition. I'd likely vote urethane and overpower physically because I can for my game.

plastic or the urethane, take the 9 counts makes spares and move on, spares are a heck of a lot better then splits and you may get lucky and carry a 2-3 bagger in there with plastic.

me personally I am jsut as comfortable throwing plastic as I am my reactive stuff most nights

I would use a hook. I usually push the ball out earlier on the lane, drop it on the lane as soon as possible to burn up some of the energy to lighten it up down the lane, get it out to the edge and let it come back to the pocket while throwing about 17MPH. This is one of the hardest lanes to play in my opinion thats why I actually carry light oil balls that will work well when the lanes are broke down.

That was my entire second shift league a couple years ago.  The heads would get scorched and the shot could get really over/under.  I surprisingly had good luck with a MoRich Onslaught particle pearl my buddy gave me for free.  Pin was probably 2 or 2.5 inches from my PAP, about ring finger height, no x-hole.  It gave me a good transition from the deep inside angle and was strong enough to kick out the corner pins pretty well.  Staying up the back of the ball a little more than you normally would for a deep inside line helped control the breakpoint as well if they got touchy.

Just jam it 100MPH with no axis tilt.

If the lanes are that hard, I would agree with triggerman, the 9-spares and lucky strikes might be good enough.  I'd rather be in the pocket than deal with the washouts and lousy counts.  You can't count on stringing strikes, so take 'em when you get lucky and then rely on your spare game.

i would stick with plastic and throw slower. i was amazed on a very dry but not really fried condition i tried that with my lane #1 clear diamond and spun the crap outta the ball. now i have no hand so it certainly wasn't a shot worthy of wes malott but i was amazed that i could hit the pocket with enough umph to strike 4 outta 5 times. i am almost tempted to try late in a match at this house as shot is wet dry with alot of dry 10 to gutter. so i am pleased to say there is a place for me to use plastic. oh and now i pick up 10 pins and 6-10's relatively easy. i should have tried sooner.

Cranker.........Move deep and stay with resin(over power lane)

Power Stroker...use urethane or plastic and move into track or use resin with a fluff release.

stroker.........use urethane or plastic with slower ball speed or throw resin with a straight release.

straighty.......use resin, this is your shot and you should eat this up and kick butt

any questions

It also kind of matters what the opposition is doing, doesn't it?

If everyone else is grinding, you can afford to play conservative and take your medicine. But if you've got people having success by taking chances, you might have to move to answer their move.

In the spirit of the original question, I'd probably take plastic or urethane and come from the outside.

Of course, I also have a very weakly-drilled resin piece that allows me to play a shot on a crap condition, so I'd move there first. But if I didn't have access to that, I'd probably get the non-resin ball and move somewhere everyone else wasn't.

As noted in the RG forum, maybe try an aggressive coverstock with a 6+" drilling.

I'd grab my polyester ball, move outside, aim straight at the pocket and put as much speed and hand on the ball as I could.  I had an opportunity to do this a few weeks ago.  It wasn't very "satisfying", but it worked well enough to get a 237 game out of it which was truely amazing.

i'd play resin. i'd either move to 3 or 4 board and come really up the back, or play a true big wheel with hand and a weak resin ball. higher risk, higher reward.

or, if there are only a few lefties, go backup.

I am a power player and I am fine grabbing my Urethne Nitro and this is what I would. Get the Nitro and move right take the crappy carry and make my spares.

Go urethane! I found the "live and die by the wide hook" strategy on late games to be too risky, especially in tournament situations. The longer the way, the bigger the room for error and unexpected things, plus wide-open splits are much more frequent.
Going closer to the gutter and keeping the hook mellow is IMHO simply less risky, and since most players tend to move ever deeper you will also find some good and stable oil conditions there. And picking up single 10s is less hazardous than coping with wide splits

straighten your shoulders, take your hand out of the question, and let the dynamics of the ball take over.

Hard and firm up the lane is the best in that situation.

Ball choice depends on bowler but i would use something pearl and mid-line.

I would go with the weaker ball and play as straight as possible.

I have been in this situation before in a tournament and I used the big hook w/a weak resin ball.

Worked wonders.

I take a tip from Bones, move right and use my pinky
and ring fingers without changing balls. I am not accurate
at breaking my wrist back. I does keep me in the game.

I'd move right 2 with a decent speed and play up the boards with my urethane or left 2 with slower ball speed using the urethane.  Sounds like a lil carry down.

this sounds like my league!  first half of first game is great before its torn down like crazy.  im swinging 18-5 the first than when i feel its time, i pull out the Ebonite Turbo urethane or the Scout Reactive and pipe it down 5.  if i let up on the speed it drives the beak, so you have to stay firm with the shot.  this past monday i figured i would start out the first game with the Turbo, and i shoot 200 even.  wasnt carrying the corners, so i jerked the Scout Reactive out of the bag for the 2nd & 3rd and shoot 244, 237 for a 681 set.  the funny thing was by the third game everyone on the pair was throwing either a target zone, white dot, scout, and one guy even pulled out an old AMF Sumo!  this is my weekly house, and i figured id better stop fighting the fact that the shot is around 5 and join them

When the lanes get dry and goofy, here is what I do.

Grab a lesser surface pearl or urethane.
Move all the way right, play up 3 at the arrows to about 8 at the break.
stay behind the ball, let it read and dont be afraid to play near the gutter.

In that kind of situation you need to give yourself a chance.

everyopne cant over power the lanes.I was having the same trouble all season and then i took a lighter ball that i could throw with more speed, had it polished at 4000 grit( my choice was a morich hercules) and that has been the ticket for me. Stronger ball with a mild drill and weak surface prep. None of the no carry issues you have with plastic, none of the burnup issues you have with upper scale balls and the lighter ball for more speed ,worked like a charm for me
