"Seconds"
« on: May 12, 2005, 10:11:02 AM »
I am new to bowling so... Can someone tell me what "factory seconds" means in the description of a new bowling ball? I have been looking at different places and have seen this in some of the categories. Does this interfere with the performance of the ball? Can they ever be a good choice?

Factory seconds can mean quite a few things. I will list them for you in order of which is the most common reason for it being labeled seconds or X-OUT
1) bad colors
2) pin too long or too short
3) too much top weight
4) too heavy (like a 15 lb 13 ounce ball)
5) And the last reason could be that there was a mix up at the factory and the ball has teh wrong core or cover on it.

The question as to if these balls are good or not?
Well, that all depends. If you get a second for color then yes it is ok to use because you know that the specs will be ok. If it is a second due to pin length or bad numbers, this could limit the drilling options on the ball meaning that it might not work for you.

Or you could be AMF and call these balls Changelings.    Are such balls typically approved?  Wouldn't they have to be approved before use?
