Summer PBA experience league notes
« on: May 11, 2007, 12:57:59 AM »
I got into a PBA experience league this summer.

It was a doubles (2 person team) league and one of my scratch league buddies decided we would bowl it to see how we would do.

We met and bowled for the first time the other night and bowled on the scorpion pattern.

One I was surprised to find out the league is handicap. We hadn’t even asked, which our fault is really, but I really thought it would be scratch.

Two is there was a lot more interest in the league than I thought there would be. A total of 26-2 person teams showed up for the league. In order to accommodate that number of teams in a summer league we went to 2 game matches and bowl 2 matches a night on different pairs.

Three there really weren’t many scratch bowlers in the league. I would say over half the league doesn’t average 180 on house conditions.

Four because of the format, moving every two games, scoring will be tougher because just as you start to build a shot you move to another pair and depending on who was there you may start over or worse they may have chopped the pattern up.

Here are some general observations.

Few scratch bowlers want to get their egos bruised by bowling on tougher conditions.

The majority in the league are mid level averages wanting to see how they fair on the PBA patterns. Plus they feel since scoring is lower they have a chance to beat the higher average bowlers that have been beating up on them.

Funny how few bowlers wanted to bowl on sport patterns but by putting out the named PBA patterns bowlers are more willing to try them. But I wonder what happens after the novelty wears off.

While the pattern was tougher I feel that the house pattern still had some memory on the lanes. If they would strip/run the pattern several days in a row I think it would play even tougher.

It will be interesting to see the league sheet and what everyone shot. In general I saw a few low 200’s shot but none back to back. The low I saw was 106 and it was against me.
Most the league scores I could see were 140 to 170.

Myself I averaged about as good as I thought I would on that pattern (195) for the 4 games. I did miss 2 spares in the 4 games that I should have picked up and was disappointed with that.

Sorry, Brian, I can only report where I've visited. I saw those when I went looking for Summer leagues. Try Hanover and Rockaway and Cirlce and tons of other houses in northern NJ. If transportation is not easily available, just call.

Good Luck.

Pinbuster... you talking about the league at Thunderbird in Wichita??

If so, it does seem a lot easier than the PBA experience league i bowled in a Thunderbird this spring but overall it was mostly the same.

I did fairly good, after starting with an awesome 159, i shot 219, 214, 217. (650 for the last 3 games)

Anyway, let me know who this is, maybe we'll get to bowl soon!

Bowled on the viper pattern. Spares were tougher thats why they throw plastic at there spares. 770 for 4 games not great but 3 miss spares and 5 splits. Haven't bowled in a few weeks and my left knee not the best right know having surgery on the 30th.

My league started this past Wednesday in one of Dave Husted's houses.

The original plan was scratch trios. They didn't set a team cap, though, and the teams ranged from 690 to 530 (THS averages). Several teams got rearranged, so now bowlers like Corey Husted, Chet Rogers, and Dave Husted aren't all bowling together... It's handicap, but I don't really care. We've got 12 teams of 3 - not bad in a 16 lane house!

There's no money to speak of - which is fine with me.

We started on Cheetah. I was pleased with how the regional players in the league were sharing their experience with the shot - and surprised at how well I did. I shot 197 - then we moved from the end pair, and hit transition at the same time - and shot 139. Last game was 200. My set 526 - high on the pair was 546, and I was low.  was My spare shooting didn't suffer as bad as others, but I've been using plastic straight at ALL spares for 3 years now.

Mumzie,

I bowled my first week of PBA last Monday and its a scratch doubles. We bowled on the Shark and the 2 high average ladies in the house bowled against us. The one lady carries around 215 or so and she shot 449. The other lady carries in the 90's and she shot 428?

I didnt find the shot till the second game as we dont move and when I got the ball to 20 at the arrows and out to 17 the ball would come back and carry. Its when the ball got one board right of 17 is when I had trouble.

Week 2 was not a pretty sight.

It was on the Viper pattern. Being shorter I thought the lane would hook more and it did. I tried several different lines/balls in practice and the first game and managed to shoot a small 170. I finally found that I could move deep with my feet, use an aggressive ball, keep my ball speed down and found a good reaction but my carry wasn’t good, a split open, 4-10 pins and 2-8 pins later I finished with a 183.

But I didn’t feel bad about how I played the lanes and others were struggling.

We then had about a 15 minute wait to get started on the second set after switching lanes.

Of course I tried the same line I ended up with on the previous pair and watch as the ball slide straight into the gutter and then moving my target and feet right I filled it out with a 6 count split. To make a long story short, 6 splits, 2 washouts, 3 balls, later I ended up with a nifty 108. I was laughing a little at myself at the end of the game.

I finally settled on using a very tame ball and pointing at the point with little hand just to keep the ball in play and shot 189 the last game.

The second pair was totally different than what we were on at first. I don’t know if it was the pattern, lane bed or who had bowled on the pair before us. And without any practice balls to see the difference in pairs it got brutal.

Another learning experience.

I'm in the northern NJ area, and I'm bowling in a PBA Experience League in Clifton, NJ @ Garden Palace Lanes (wood house).  First night is June 4th; start time is 8:00pm (pre-bowl organizational meeting @ 7:30).  And as charlest pointed out; it is singles format, 4 games.

Just to add on here I missed the first week of the summer PBA league due to finishing a winter league.  So last night was my 1st night on the Scorpion.  It showed with a 158 the first game.  I spent too much time trying new lines and not enough time just making adjustments to my normal shot.  Should not have been trying to force something that was not there.  Next time disengage brain do what comes easy.  Came back better with 223 and 190.

by the way this is the same league as Madiballz23 and psaunders300.  Look forward to bowling with you all this summer.
