what makes some balls hit hard and others flat?
« on: July 22, 2004, 04:24:19 AM »
lately I've had a question that keeps bothering me so I was wondering if any of you ball wiz people could help me out with this one.  What makes a bowling ball hit hard or like a wet towel (flat)?  I've noticed that most of my bowling balls hit hard and then there's just like 1 or 2 that just doesn't have the drive/pin action or whatever you wanna call it; and no, the ball doesn't roll out/burn out by the time it hits the pocket and it still hits weak even though it's on a medium oiled lane condition. I don't know if it has to do something with the core, coverstock, or something else.

               -thanks

If you match the right ball with the right lanes and hit the pocket just right it will sound hard !!! Even Plastic!!!

yeah well I knew that, I have a ball that doesn't hit hard or get very good pin action on every lane I bowl on.

my thinking is that it has more to do with angle entry and the amount of roll it has when it enters the pocket.

if a ball is not capable of creating a good angle, due to drilling or surface or whatever it may be, then you will never get a good result when it gets to the rack.  if the ball can create an angle, and roll into the pocket, meaning it has stopped revving and finished its hook, then the roll will carry the balls momentum on the angle and finish through the pocket.  if it skids, it will deflect, and if it goes in too straight, the angle iwll not be sufficient(usually) to carry the corners.

that's a good point and I had already thought about that.  But the ball has finished it's skid and hook and it still hits weak.  FYI:  I usually stand about middle of the lane and shoot it out to 10 and let it work it's way back.  depending on conditions though, I may be forced to play any part of the lane but this ball still doesn't hit well.  I don't know if it matters to you guys or not but the ball that I'm speaking about in particular is the Raging Inferno.  I'm a tweener with medium revs and ball speed.  The ball is drilled like a shifted out label drill with the pin at 42 degrees and the cg is kicked out 1" and the cg is 1" below my center of grip (which gives it more thumb weight) with a 5/8" bit drilled 2 1/2" deep.   that may seem like useless info for you guys but I thought that I'd include it to get the best understanding of why this ball hits flat.

When the ball has finished it's hook, it is rolling out..!! If it's hitting weak, then it's rolling out too soon.

This makes sense by what you've told us about your ball. It's a raging Inferno, which is particle. So, it's rolling early and/or hooking less at the backend, because of the particles.

It has the CG below the midline, for some thumb weight, which rolls earlier. Then, to top it off, the CG is kicked out, which produces and earlier roll and/or less backend.

So, there you have it. The ball is rolling way too early and rolling out too soon, which is why you're not carrying with this ball.

If you change the weights and/or drilling/layout, to produce more length, I'm sure the ball will carry better for you. =:^D

Would a weight hole help in this situation?
