Ok, new balls are introduced and discontinued all the time in the bowling world. They say it's good for business, but I disagree.

You have a ball (ball a) which you love. It does XYZ very well. Ball A gets eaten by the big bad pin setter and management can't find any more ball A's around. So Mr Pro shop guy says "The owner says pick a ball that's similar to what you had." Which factor of ball B is the most important to you? The biggest sticking point? Do you wish you had the same core shape, or maybe you liked it because it was low rg high diff, etc etc.

Interesting question. Obviously you try to match up everything as best you can and they all tie together, but the option I start the process with would be the core numbers. For me that works pretty well in getting an idea of what I can expect. There haven't been many balls that really surprise me with their shape on the lanes in respect to the core numbers.

Then it's cover. Actually that one is pretty close to be the top option, but I'm a core guy.

I couldn't find much fault in an argument about surface and the properties of the cover itself being number one.

Layout would be last on my list. Depending on how close Ball A and Ball B are the layout might need to be changed so I would never go into it thinking I want the same exact thing put on a different ball. Close, sure, but the other factors have to come first.

Symmetrical vs. asymmetrical goes with the core numbers for me. That's partly what they're for in my opinion. Core shape rarely comes into the discussion for me. It's hard to place an emphasis on that when different densities come into play, and even if they don't I'm still looking at the numbers.

Great points here and they are part of why I made thr decision of cover. While I strongly believe the core numbers and type are extremely important, I thought about my favorite balls ever and how hard it would be to replace them if I couldn't get the same cover feel. My top consists of balls like the HPD, Hy-Road, Marvel Pearl, Agent, Wipe Out, and IQ Tour. There have been many balls that have similar core numbers to these (if not the same via different but same core) that aren't nearly as good because they don't use a versatile cover. I still haven't found a ball that gives me what the HPD does because ball companies don't make balls that read the oil and respond to dry in the way that ball did.

I went with numbers, because while the cover IS the most important part of ball reaction, it and a layout can be adjusted to make it work. The Timeless, Rocket, and Hyroad all roll nothing alike despite all having the same cover, while a Rocket Ship with polish and a slightly tweaked layout is actually really close to being a Hyroad. However, there are very good and solid reasons that can be used for every choice on your list aside from layout, I don't find it to be nearly as big a factor as everyone seems to think it is. Take one ball and change the surface and you completely negate having duplicates of the same ball with different layouts, and I find that balls with the same surface but different layouts don't really have much difference between them.

All of those factor in. Lets say for example, I have a ball that I absolutely love and its discontinued (this has happened to me) and something happens to it, I'm trying to find a ball that will give me the same shape, especially in how fast or slow it responds. Eventhough companies discontinue balls, if it was successful, they rarely completely go away from it unless it isn't cost efficient. Because of these reasonings in todays game, I always recommend buying multiples of a ball you love. At one time I had 6 Radical Reaxs, 8 Hyroads, 4 IQ Tours, 3 Tour Nanos, 3 Tour Pearls. But if you like a ball and it rolls good for you then youll see the return on your investment.

Impending, without Scientific proof, it clearly is the cover of the ball; BUT without the engine (core shape) there's no telling the type of shape the ball will provide each bowler differently (on said condition).

On today's condition's you have to leverlout the importance of core/cover combo to completness of shape, motion, and backend (imo)

Imagine a hotdog without the bum, and there you have my Analysis up above (imo).

Core shape does play a roll in ball shape......it appears to be a very small roll and why manufactures don't continuously change ball core shapes in a line. (example Ebonite Game Breaker series all same core, Hammer Black Widow series, Brunswick Mastermind series etc etc) Occasionally they will tweak the rg and diff in a series to help with a ball reaction but not change the core shape.

Ebonite did a great video on this axis pin symmetry and showing the very slight differences in three different core shapes when all other factors are the same.

What we continue to see from all manufactures in most of their performance lines is the same core with different coverstocks to get the different shapes they want. To dumb down as they do a solid, a pearl, and a hybrid ball is the standard releases across almost every ball release the manufactures have.

What I look at when buying a ball or replacing something is what the manufactures intended purpose is for the ball and in what price point or performance category it is in.........and if it looks good. Image is everything

For me, it's cover strength.

For leagues I can't go too strong or it becomes a conditional ball. I'm sure if I had more oil and/or less friction to work with then I might have a different opinion.

While I stand by my choice, that's exactly what I also see, so as of now, I also base it mainly on cover prep.
