Trash talk is bad for the PBA
« on: December 17, 2006, 07:57:19 AM »
I know it doesn't exactly belong here, but more people visit this forum.

Anyway, I believe trash talk is bad for the PBA.  These guys are supposed to PROFESSIONALS.  Period.  Attempting to belittle your opponent is not my idea of a professional.

One could make the argument that NFL players belittle their opponents and trash talk.  Which they do, but that is a physical sport, which has alot of testosterone in it.  Comparing the two would be apples and oranges.

I'm sure others will say, "its boring".  If you only watch to hear belittling and yelling, go watch the WWE.  MILLIONS of people watch 4 HOURS of golf coverage every Saturday and Sunday.  There is no trash talking, belittling or the like.  People watch to be amazed at the professionals ability to do something they can not.  Many of the viewers couldn't tell the difference between THS and a PBA pattern if you gave them the lane graphs, but those of us that do should watch to be amazed, to relate to the struggle of carrying or shooting 730 ON TELEVISION, on a PBA pattern.  I think only a small handful of members on this site could even avg 200 on those patterns.

Thats why I watch the PBA.

I don't care how many flat bellied guys like Norm, Sean, Chris(barnes) make the show.  By belittling each other and acting like trash(only a hand full are guilty), the image of a fat, crude beer swelling bowler will continue to haunt this games best players!

A sport that impresses me with etiquette and fairness is Snooker (a Bristh version of billard). It is a real gentlemen sport, and thze players behave like it. You will never see any player making an offense or talk the opponent down. Psycho attacks are O.K., but rather through skill and determination. The players even announce fouls when they commit them and the referee does not witness it (in many cases the ref does not have a chance to do so).

This "clean" image has a great appeal and contributed much to the sport's popularity in Europe. And I think it could be a model for other sports - like bowling - too.

I don’t like trash talking but that is a personal preference.

That said, I thought Chris Barnes made an observation yesterday during the telecast that I have thought all along.

He said that Norm didn’t want to get excited and get his adrenalin pumping. Norm was trying very hard not to hit the ball at the bottom and that he needed to stay calm and within himself to control that.

Bowling is a game of self control. When you let your emotions run wild you lose some of that control and it is difficult to regain it when you have to throw another shot in 25 seconds.

Most of the top players on the PBA maintain that even keel.

I personally always felt I had an advantage over anyone trying to get in my head or who is very demonstrative on the lanes.
