Of course a "benchmark" ball could be anything, because it all depends on where you're bowling and whether it's a fresh shot or second or third squad. I would not use the same ball to start out every time I bowl. Gotta see what's going on with the other reactions. If it's fresh then find out what others have been using and with what results. On my usual THS stuff, then you just use what you know will work and what ball is the most comfortable. The real key is to know exactly what every ball you have does in all kinds of conditions and that is just taking time to practice different shots. I'll be practicing with some new stuff this summer to get the feel for them before fall leagues start. That's why I don't like taking the summers off. Good deals on stuff and practice time!
