What should bowling center employees know
« on: April 10, 2010, 09:55:50 AM »
What bowling center employees should know!!!

Most new employees with jobs in the entertainment industry, are required
to have training and orientation of 40 plus hours before they even start
their first day on the job. Most of this training is not technical training, but
knowledge of how assisting guests, answering questions, how to calm
parents when dealing with lost children.General knowledge of the
theme park,movie theater,movie studio,etc.
But the employees at bowling centers rarely know what is going on.What are some of the things you think bowling center employees should know.

How to keep score and how to operate the 'automatic" scorers
How to help casual bowlers find an appropriate house ball
Where towels, mops, and approach cleaners are located
Learning frequent bowlers' names
Why talcum powder and other powders on shoes soles are bad ideas
What constitutes a foul
Why bowlers should never step across the foul line
How to smile
How to say "thank you"
How to compliment customers
The center's hours of operation
When open play lanes are available
About current or upcoming specials,tournaments,promotions
When the lanes were last oiled;
How to answer the phone properly
How much it costs for open bowling

Just a start, what are some others you can think of.

When "pin chasing" do NOT walk on the approach when returning after walking in the gutter. Walk on an imaginary line "between" the approaches.

Know something about bowling. Sounds simplistic, but it is amazing how many employees of bowling centers really know nothing about the game.

Be pleasant to the customers, even if they are a PITA.

I see some league bowlers that dont know some of this stuff.

some still see no problem with throwing a mound of powder on their shoes.

one guy this year stuck at the line and stepped on the lane. he walked back without taking his shoes off stepping all over the approach. I had it cleaned up but they missed a small spot and guess who slides right onto that spot 3 of my shots later :-) It was a pretty scary and fast slide!

That pins go in order 1-10 from left to right in 4 rows... Stupid employees don't know how to look at a picture and match it to what pins we need up. Then again only 1 employee actually bowls. The rest do that dreaded devil sport, 5 pin.

Not to make negative comments about customers, especially in front of other customers.

Which customers make a career out of complaining, and how to react to it.

 That bowling is  fun.

i will admit that the above comments i have witnessed but... i work part time in a small bowling alley and i would like to say taking care of today's customer is frequently a b*tch. common courtesy and respect is frequently lacking.
i encounter people who:
-talk down to me
-purposely leave bowling balls and garbage on the rack
-throw garbage on the floor
-let their kids run down the lane (one guy encouraged a 4 yr old to keep running while i stood there in horror)
-let their kids stick hands in ball return (hey it tickles)
-are too lazy to even return their shoes
-leave 5 year olds unattended (hmm i don't wanna even think how many reasons that is wrong)
after doing this part-time for 2 years i have to admit i have very little respect left for the public in general. just my 2 cents.
