Do you enjoy tournament bowling? Why or why not?
« on: May 30, 2007, 05:47:56 AM »
The more I do it, the more I love it.  The challenge, the shot at real money, the elation of doing well.  How about you?

Mr. Lebowski, this is Bill Salnicker with the Southern Cal Bowling League, and I just got a, an informal report, that a member of your team, uh, Walter Sobchak, drew a firearm during league play. If this is true of course, it contravenes a number of the league's by-laws, and article 27 of the league...

Yes all the above,

the one thing that really gets my goat is when the "Prima Donna's" find every reason to blame something other than "they just got beat".

Dlenart--

I know guys that LOVE the toast, and specifically look for later shifts in tourneys.  I'm NOT one of them.

I like bowling in tourneys except for the fact that I'm a 195 bowler.
Not good enough for the big boys and too little handicap to compete with the lower average guys who always seem to shoot lights out.

I think I should stick in another caveat, what kind of tournaments do you bowl in?  I rarely bowl in anything on a house shot (save the occasional holiday no-tap), and I find that on flatter, tougher conditions anyone can compete to some degree in a handicap tourney.  On the ABT I've seen people with 40+ sticks win tourneys as well as people with less than 5.

I do every now and again, but being around 200 average has huge disadvantages versus 160 or 230 average. Untill I can get my average up there, I'm not going to waste my time getting beat by 160 average bowlers.

The only 'tournament'  I've ever been in are 2 regionals.  I do love it because there is no BS(from what I've seen).  Anyone who shells out 200-275 bucks in the hopes they are the best out of an average of 100+ is what I prefer.  None of that no-tap crap, and bowlers who sandbag like hell.  Plus with the extreme differences in conditions compared to a THS makes me work that much harder, which in turn makes me a much better league bowler.

I enjoy them.  They are as much an opportunity for vacation as they are an opportunity to make money.  Really, it's bowling, if you're looking to make money, you'll make more (and with less frustration) working at McDonalds.

I go to have a good time.  I like bowling on shots besides what's put out at my home house (which isn't cake, I'm told), even if it means I shoot my average.

I like bowling in a tournament because i take it serious. I know i can not have mental lapses, plus i love the challenge.

I enjoy both league play and tournament, but must admit that I like single tournament best - I can stay very focussed when it counts, and except for one occasion (where I was sick) I always played better than current average in such situations.

I also love to play in a team - but it needs the right mood and spirit. Sometimes, when it does not run well for the team, it can be a burden but that's something to the through together. Personally, I feel more pressure while palying in the team, since I want to make a positive contribution and not be bailed out by others. When I play "for myself", the pressure is different and rather something I fell I can "control" better.

Nevertheless, competition on whatever level should always be a serious bowler's goal, since it is also the only opportunity to have a more or less valid measure of one's abilities. Nothing beats the thrill to start play in a foreign house, unknown pattern and unknown opponents. Head to head duels are best, either vs. team or in singles

I liked the experience of bowling in a few tournaments, but as someone said before, I am in between with the average.

Bowling in a few handicap tournaments, the level of bagging was unreal. I think I bowled in 4 tourneys. A 68x (on toast) and a 71x (on admittedly a very easy shot) were not good to cash. AND this was entering with a 196 so I had some handicap.

My 210 THS average is not good enough (yet) to compete in scratch tourneys- but that is where I hope to be heading in the next year or so.

league is good, we got about 30 ppl in the summer league atm

tournament is better, why? whats better than seein 50+ ppl who have the same hobby as myself? traveling is also cool. The best part is to be recognized by good players. Cash is good, but not everyone can have a good day, so that depends on many factors.

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.
