When the backends...
« on: January 19, 2010, 09:38:52 AM »
are fresh and hooking on THS (1st shift fresh oil), wondering if I should be starting with my ball with less surface (something polished)?  The ball I have for oil that has a bit more surface, does great on carry down, but may not be finishing quite as strong during the beginning of the night (may be burning up after the mids).  The stronger ball of course needs more oil in the heads.  I usually start with the stronger ball first.  Hope this makes sense, I seem to have a habit of either starting with a wrong ball or switching too late to the ball I should have started with.

It is normal to start on a fresh condition with clean backends with a ball with more surface(duller). As the heads dry out and you are forced to move in, you would then go to a ball with less surface(smoother and/or polished).
If you start with a polished ball, you will often have severe over/under problems. There are always exceptions.

+1.  I got a pretty high rev rate, and even i throw 1000-2000 alot on fresh w/ clean backends.  Control the breakpoint until they open up, then ball down to something w/ more length as the heads/mids go
