Totally by feel.  I don't use a spare ball, so it all depends on what the lanes are doing.  For 10 pins, I lay my wrist back to take all the fingers out of it and just aim at a target a few feet in front of the pin.

I've tried using a spare ball in the past and felt my spare shooting suffered greatly.

i use plastic at my corner pins, go off my strike line for everything else in competition.  in practice i strictly use plastic, and i am improving on it.
tho a few weeks ago the oiling maching apparently malfunctioned and between the 2nd arrows was 60 ft of oil..i used plastic for all spares that nite and only missed one spare..a split.

For 6,7,10 a polyester ball - with fixed targets on the lane and at the approach, and for the rest mainly the strike ball and a 3-6-9 derivate (I add 1 or 2 boards, esp. when making cross-lane spares, keeping my strike ball release in most cases) plus eventual hand position changes, e. g. a suitcase grip with 90° side rotation for anything the 3-9 is involved in on the right side, to make the ball skid further down th lane and delay its break point for minimal hook. Works pretty well, but the corner pins... need more practice

chi,

This is a PDF file of the Triax System (http://"http://homepage.mac.com/dukeharding/.Pictures/Bowling/TRIAXrh.pdf") I used to use.

I "pin bowl" my single pin, on the holes.

I use the TRIAX for multi-pin.

Good to see you back on here...

Plastic and a fixed target for the 10, and some spare conversion attempts.  Everything else is by feel or a modification of my strike line.

Polyester ball. Things are easier that way.

Plastic across the center arrow unless faced with double-wood, or something else with a sleeper (bucket or 3-6-9-10).

Plastic, mostly just by feel.  I couldn't tell you what I look at it to shoot a 7 pin, I just know it when I get up there to throw at it!!  I also like to shoot across the lane from right to left on the pins on the left side unlike some people who throw plastic at their spares.

Plastic ball and 4-7-11 on less complicated spares. Strike ball and 4-7-11 on tough spares.

For left hand spares up to and including washouts, I use my Slate Blue Gargoyle and hook the ball to the right of the oil line (on our lanes that's at about the 8 board), lining up in practice for the 7 pin and adjusting my body to the left as needed.  For right hand spares up to and including the 3-6-10 (but not the 3-6-9-10), I use a plastic ball thrown straight over the third arrow, lining up for the 10 pin in practice and adjusting my body to the right as needed.  Everything in the middle I use my strike ball and release.  Regarding the left hand spares, I figure why not use the bounce area for spares as well as strikes.  --  JohnP

I use the Triax system and slightly modified it to fit my game. It works well no matter what the lane condition is, sport shot or house shot.

It's discussed in two California Bowling News articles:

http://www.californiabowlingnews.com/issues.htm

Look on page 2 in these issues:
December 28th, 2006 Issue - The Triax Spare System, Part I
January 4th, 2007 Issue - The Triax Spare System, Part II

I think there was a BTM article on it 2-3 years ago as well. I don't remember what issue it was.

Another triax user here. Using this system with my trusty blue dot I can throw straight at the majority of my spares, including double wood and buckets.

ever since i used the triax system my left side spares have increased dramatically. I never liked going cross the lane for left sided spares but this makes it easy for me.

since i cant bowl a straight shot, i minimize my spares with a reactive ball that doesnt move, the dynothane vendetta maxx

nothing is fixed, prior start of league or competition, most of the leaves were tested, that includes, 7, 10, 3-6-10, bucket, 3-6-9-10 even brooklyn in case of washout

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.

what spare system do you use?

hook is great
straight is greater

I alsways pick my single pins over the middle with a straight ball (7 from the right 10 from the left 5 pin also from the right etc)

on more complicated spares I use my XXXL with hook to get the pins to get into the direction I want

I have no real "system" I just use my normal straight or hook throw and know how much my ball will hook to get it where it needs to hit to get e.g. the 3pin into the 7 (3-7-10 split) works fine.

Most single pins I go straight at with the exception of the nine pin which I move on board left of my last shot and throw a ''strike'' at it. Anything else I go straight with a broken wrist, when you can throw over 25 mph and break your wrist plastic is redondent.

I stand 3 boards left of the last dot on the last for the ten and six pin. one board right of the last dot on the right for the seven pin and four pin. Adjust accordingly for anything else.

If I have to deal with over the top returns I will hook it at stuff on the left.

I use my own spare shooting system. I use plastic on all spares except some double wood. I will shoot the 2-8 with my plastic, but not the 3-6-9-10 where I need some hook to cover the 9 pin. You just need to get comfortable using your spare ball with a consistent target and lots of practice.

I normally stand in one spot for right side spares and another spot for left side spares.  I just change the traget board im looking at.  I always use a plastic ball for most spares except for double wood and the 9 pin.

I've had trouble with my left side spares for some reason.  I'm fine with all right side spares.  I need to figure out a different target and line for left side spares.
