Burning Up - How do you really know?
« on: May 24, 2005, 09:02:45 AM »
I guess I should know this by now but how do you know if your ball is burning up vs poor reaction of the ball itself. I have a pretty good idea when I am now rolling it correctly, but sometimes I see guys with less hand get better reaction with less aggressive equipment. I throw 18+ mph.

It's just something you can see.  If a ball isn't burning up, it should still make a move on the backend, however slight it might be.  A ball that's burning up won't have much, if anything on the backend, and won't hit worth crap.

Easiest way to give yourself a working example of hook out in effect, I bowled yesterday and used a strong reactive ball with a pretty strong core. I used two different releases, a strong load/unload type of rleease, followed by another shot where i used a broken wrist with no load or unload movement at the bottom of the swing... I also used the same amount of speed. I was covering more boards with the weaker release. The stronger release wasn't covering as many boards because it was using up all its energy early on.

Give it a try on your own time in practice one day. It's pretty interesting.

Flat 10s, weak splits, and the ball will be hooking more at the break point than it does through the deck.

If you are not sure if the ball is burning up or skidding then throw the next ball slower.
If the ball had been burning up it will pretty much react the same or burn up a little sooner. If the had been skidding then the ball will hook a little more on t he back end.

Sometimes balls will burn up and skid at the same rate. More often than not if you have that ball reaction and you are not carrying then it is time for a ball change. Once in a while a ball will burn/skid and perform well but not too often. It is not easy to “make” the ball work so just change balls if you have one.

Bowl great!
