What to expect - new lanes
« on: May 05, 2010, 11:11:11 AM »
the house I bowl at is getting new lanes installed this month - going from wood to Qubica AMF SPL. I signed up for 2 summer leagues to use them as practice and get a feel for what the new lanes will be like - can anyone tell me what to expect as far as a difference -
Thanks

One big thing is that the approaches may get changed to synthetics from the woods as part of the deal, if so be careful as they will be much tackier and vary with humidity more.

Now the lanes themselves will feel slicker, you ball will push farther and when the backends are really clean the backend reaction will be greater on the synthetic versus the woods.

Well, from my experience about two years ago when my home center did this, they was ALOT of friction to begin with. We also went from wood to synthetic. I can remeber the first few times I bowled on them they were very hooky yet controllable. Since the time they installed them, they have settled down quite a bit. Alot of the low rev guys were scoring very well the first year and now guys have been struggling on these new lanes. Remember, this is from my experience so I would appreciate no criticism on this.

Excellent - thanks for help all. Glad I waited to get a new ball until after the summer league so I can see what I need. I just finished my first league in 21 years - and my "arsenal" currently consists of a Hammer Burn and an original FaBall Black Hammer. Something new is on the way this summer though

Also, expect weird oil conditions. Form my experience, the lane crew will need some time to tune the oil machine for the new surface. Asa mentioned before, high surface friction is one issue, but the oil situation could be quite extreme, so better be prepared for either very dry conditions (if they are careful), or an oily swamp with carrydown potential - esp. when the house used to have wood surfaces and the former oil machine program is run.

Thats another good point. Its either going to be extreme oil or ecxtreme friction until they get the lane machine calibrated properly. This may take a few weeks of tweeking. Dont get frustrated with the new lanes, they will settle down over time.
