It all comes down to top weight.  If the top weight is more than 1 ounce, then after drilling the fingers, then you do need a thumb hole.  However, there are no rules as to the minimum size of the thumb hole.  So, I usually just put a 23 hole 3 1/2 inches below the ring finger.  I offset the hole like that because I track so high that it eliminates risk of ball rolling over the thumb hole.

Also, I usually go with balls that have medium top weights (at or near 3 ounces).  That way I can keep the cg above the midline in order to concentrate the top weight closer to the fingers in order to keep my virtual thumb hole small.

I throw 2 handed, but I use my thumb as do a few other ones (like Cassidy), so my drillings are exactly the same as yours would be, well just a lot weaker and shinier, polish is a great friend of mine.
