what to use as a spare ball?

I've been using my first ball thats an old dead columbia300 superbeast for spares. I want to retire it and quit carrying it around its pretty beat up. I don't know if I should go with a plastic ball or something thats just going to be really mild like a scout black urethane or something like that. I'm pretty used to having a little hook with spares so I'm not sure if plastic would feel right picking up 7 pins(left handed)

Was also thinking something other than plastic thats still mild might have dual uses as spare ball and dry ball.

any advice would be great.

A urethane ball is the easiest way to get spares it's that simple

you may want to look into extremely low reactives like the hit from storm and just polish it up. that is what ive done. just thought you may like the info.

my whitedot has been used so much by me the polish has been rubbed of. thers still polish just not as much as factory. i even took a grey scotch brite pad to it one time. At the end it hooks a little but then just rolls, liek it dosent hook and keep hooking.

I would be afraid a hit or something woudl start to hook and keep hookign an dmiss ur 7 pin by like an inch.

And throwing a brand new plastic ball a little strgihter then ur ball now wouldnt be that hard to adjust too.

Actually plastic is a little less reactive than urethane. I'd go with plastic.

klep -- If you're making your spares now, why change?  My rule on spares is "Whatever it takes to knock the pins down".  So what if it's beat up and looks bad, if it makes the spares, keep using it.  --  JohnP

It more than just looks bad there are parts that if it rolled over would effect the way the ball rolled. the laned I played on in high school ate it up pretty bad.

Also the grip isnt what it should be so I figure I might aswell replace it.
Think I'm going to go with plastic.

I don't carry a spare ball. Should the lane dictates then I pick a 1 lb lighter house ball.

I would bet I am the only person on this board to be using a BLACK KNIGHT to shoot spares.  I plucked it off a discontinued list from a distributor in the area about four years ago.  The ball is a rock!

Sometimes a shoe works well...

Truly, plastic goes well, but be careful, some plastic balls like my Optyx Dragon hook on dry... Look for a really hard plastic ball (Maxims, White dots, Storm spare...)

Well, I really like my Optyx Dragon, and I am not going to change it EVER, but, if you what straight, gof for HARD plastic coverstocks

Unless you're having extreme problems with corner pin (7 if you're left-handed, 10 if you're right-handed) use your strike ball. Learn with what you've got. You'll be a better bowler not having to worry about changing balls all the time. My current avgs 203 and 211 without the use of a spare ball.

I'm surprised nobody asked.....

How many different oil patterns do you see?  If you are just a normal league bowler who doesn't go to many tourneys or play different shots, just learn to flat wrist your strike ball.  BUT, if you bowl on more than one pattern and like to bowl tourneys and such, buy the plastic.  Plastic will take the lane out of play, which is VERY useful if you actually bowl different patterns.  I am struggling right now because I have to redrill my plastic, and any strike ball I use will still hook 5 boards when flat wristed....

well the lanes were super dry the other day when I posted this realizing I had a problem. I was using my eraser not the new particle one, the old one and it was hooking the entire lane. I didn't have old ball with me at all so 7 pins were impossible. even using my broken wrist shot i use with my superbeast for 7 pins when the ball hit the heads it ended up looking like a strike shot instead of a 7 pin shot. yesterday I went to the same lanes and the same ball wouldnt hook one 1inch if through it down 2 board. so I had no problem using that ball for 7 pins then.

I went ahead and ordered a plastic ball. My problem is I don't like to carry more than 2 balls but I guess I need to change that. I either dont have my oil ball with me or I don't have my spare ball with me. lol.

I guess I'll carry my oil ball in a one ball case so I don't have to use a huge roller I can't stand those. its going to become a workout just getting from the house to the car and the car to the inside of the bowling alley.

After years of not using a Columbia Yellow Dot for spares and getting tired of missing easy corner pins, I finally bought a Brunswick Target Zone a couple of weeks ago. Since bowling in my two leagues, I've missed one spare. I use it for every spare, left, right and middle of the lane (especially necessary at my Tuesday league house, you never know what reaction you will get on spares going cross lane where it's drier). I'm very comfortable going from ball to ball on strikes and spares, so I don't see that big a difference in terms of fit...
