What to use on the U.S. Open pattern?
« on: December 06, 2009, 01:23:06 AM »
Tonight is the last night of my PBA Experience League and they're laying out the U.S. Open Pattern.  They also put it out last week but I had family obligations over the holiday weekend and I had to miss it.

Any suggestions what type of ball would work best on this pattern for a bowler with average speed and revs.  I can adjust my release to come up the back or go more around so my options aren't limited there.

I was thinking that just bringing a solid, a hybrid, and a pearl would keep my options open, but I'd prefer having on hand different layouts of the same type of ball that people here found most effective on this pattern.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Every time i've bowled on the US Open pattern it hasn't been that oily, there is some oil and it is 40 foot but I never had a problem getting reaction. I didn't use my strong stuff at all on it, I found my midrange equipment the best and threw a Hy-Road mainly on it.

Ball isn't going to matter a ton on the shot though, its flat as you can get so no ball is going to make up for errant shots.

I had the best luck with rolly stuff, any snappy ball was exagerrated by the flat pattern. This pattern is kinda fun once you get lined up.

The topography of the lanes dictate how they will play and the volume.  If you have a worn track arean on the lanes a lower volume, the shot will play in with stuff that is very skid/flippy.  If the pattern is on a newer surface or the left side of the lane, it will most likely require something rolly playing more direct angles.

You can usually play it however you like...just don't miss.  You can't create any area so you do what you're most comfortable with and make good shots.  9/ is as good as a 4 bagger on a house shot.

Good lord that shot was tough.  Long and heavy.  It didn't matter what balls I brought, they all played exactly the same.  Pure skate without even a slight move at the end of the pattern.

I used to play a straight cannon ball shot until I learned to throw a hook about five years ago.  So I just let memory take over and threw it straight and hard and actually scored okay.

A half ten is not a great shot.  No, you shouldn't have carried it.

keep your break point 10-11 and to the left (left if ur right handed). Use lowend stuff drilled strong with surface, or pin down high end stuff with surface. You really need the ball to lay off on the backend.

If the ball was going basically straight, are you sure they didn't put out the old 50' ToC shot or something?

Just bowled a qualifier yesterday (8 games)..  They were brutal!  No one aveeraged over 200!  34 under won the spot. 4th place was 91 under.  Like Zack said.. stay inside of 10 and use smooth rolling stuff. I had my best look around 20 to 13 almost backing it up to the pocket. Guys with more hand were deeper because of how much they hook in there.  GL!

I would practice with your spare ball straight at spares. That is the ball you will be using the most on a US Open type shot.
