What weight do most pros use???????
« on: November 08, 2006, 04:20:14 AM »
I know they say use what you can handle but if you can handle 15# should you actually use it or should I use a 14# ball. What ball gets more hook? I know 15# has a harder hit.

14# and higher all carry equally well.  They may carry differently, but they will all hit just fine.  14# may deflect more, leaving 5-pins on light hits, while a 15# or 16# may not deflect as much.  On high hits, the heavier weights may blow past the 9 while the 14# may deflect.

It's six of one, half a dozen of the other.  I went from 14# to 15# solely because 15# stuff is usually far easier to find.  Use what's comfortable for you.  Many pros who used to use 16# have dropped to 15# with no loss of carry.  I would say that it's easier to throw 20+ games a day with 15# than 16# and that's a big part of it.  Others have moved from 15# to 16# (WRW did this at the end of last year).

if your using a new high tech weight block,  go 15,  you will not lose any hitting power.

this is not true if you are using a lower price ball with a weaker weight block.

most pro's have been using 15's  for years.

i would say in sales in our shop>>> 75% 15lbs.>>> 25% 16 lbs.

but most of the nore experienced bowlers buy 15!!!!!!

some time ago rick benoit of brunswick commented on this very subject in bowlers journal international. he stated that over 70% of the players on tour will drill 15lb. equipment. a few will use 14lb. balls with the rest using "man weight", or 16lb. equipment. there are more players than you think that use 16lb. equipment: walter ray williams, jr., norm duke, chris barnes, brian voss, parker bohn III, robert smith, etc. i'm sure there are others.

Do many players carry two different weights in their bag?  Was thinking about getting a Special Agent, and wanted to know whether it's worth it to try a 16, for a change from my 15's. I thought a 16 for a ball for more oil (I think the Special Agent is for that) would be good for a tad less speed, and less deflection if the shot calls for it.  Just a thought.

Take my opinion as you will. Ive been working in a pro shop for 3 years, and we NEVER recoment moving up to 16 lbs ever. If you are looking to get a ball for heavier oil and are worried about your speed and making sure the ball turns over, just drill the ball with an earlier rolling agressive drilling. If there really is a lot of oil, then there will be enough energy at the pin deck to take out all 10 with an early drilling.
