Dishwasher Method to Cleaning bowling ball

Hey all I just wanted to know what does having the Heat Dry do to the Bowling ball, I ask becuase I just caught the dishwasher with heat dry on for about 20 mins. will it destroy the coverstock?

I wouldn't recommend it.  Although I've cleaned all of my balls in the dishwasher before, recently my Lanemasters/Legends Black Pearl cracked only after a short time in the dishwasher.  Other balls had gotten so hot that I couldn't even hold them after removing them.  It seems some balls heat up faster than others, hold heat longer, and/or are less resistent to temperature changes.

Dont do it.

Get some Rubbing alcohol and use it every 6-9 games all you need.

1. Local pro shop doesn't have an oven,
2. Dishwasher has worked like a charm for me every time,
3. My dishwasher has a lower-temperature drying cycle than most,
4. Easy,
5. Free,
6. If the ball does happen to crack, you're replacing an old ball anyway -- i.e., nothing really lost. The dishwasher is something you do only on "anniversaries" -- 100 games, 200 games, etc. After you cross the 100-game mark with newer equipment, you're living on borrowed time anyway.

If all else fails...run hot water out of the tub into a 5 gallon bucket, put the ball in the bucket 5-15 minutes then pour out the water.  Run hot water again to rinse of excess oil and wipe with a micro fiber towel.

This is probably the safest way, not the most effective, but it won't cost you a bowling ball.

Don't leave it in the bucket too long.  It will take on water.

Just did four of them in the dishwasher last weekend! I agree with jess
I do it once or twice a year with no problems.

Just turn off the electric water heat and the dry cycle. Then its just the hot water, no hotter than your tap. If you try to use the dry cycle you are asking for trouble!

The dishwasher works great. And you never want to use the heated dry as it only heats one side of the ball. It's the uneven heat that will crack your ball. I also suggest that you place the finger holes down (I also plug my finger holes to keep water out of the inside of the ball as much as possible.


Don't use detergent. If you have a spinner, take the surface down to 320 or 400 before the dishwasher treatment for the best results. Let the ball dry for at least one full day before resurfacing to your desired finish.

And as a few others here has said, this is a rare maintenance item for a ball. Once every 100 games at most. You will keep your ball much longer if you clean it after every session of bowling.

Motiv has a great cleaner called Power Scuff Gel,  It will clean your ball as well as draw out the oil...

It's safe and does not expose the ball to extreme heat....

Before any of this de-oiling with heat, remember to sand with a 360 or 500 pad (green scotchbrite works too) to open up the pores so more oil can escape.

Having the heat dry isn't recommended, but if it hasn't already cracked it, just turn it off and let it air dry. Hopefully the heat hasn't changed the physical properties of the cover.

 Have used the dishwasher several times, both with and without detergent. For me, it seems to work best with just a touch of detergent, warm wash, and air dry without heat.

ALWAYS TURN OFF THE HEAT DRYING OPTION
