What would be a good option
« on: February 25, 2010, 04:55:11 PM »
I bowled with a guy tonight who throws about 14 MPH, has a ton of revs and a about a 12 board hook. He struugles to keep the ball under control. In his words, his revs are too much for his ball speed. He''s tried using weaker equipment but without a lot of success. He even has trouble with plastic stuff. Would putting some kind a right hand drilling on a ball help him get more control? Thanks for any suggestions?

Maybe some release training, or playing a different part of the lane?

You're probably right about the release training but he "no thumbs" the ball and I don't see him changing. He sees a lot of skid and inconsistancy if he plays more in the soup.

Then a coach would IMHO be even a better thing to consider.

Do not waste money with equipment when the "error factor" has other sources. It is an ego thing that keeps many players from making prgress with their game.

If it was me, a coach would be the answer but this guy has been bowling a long time and I just don't see that happening and after talking to him for quite some time last night I think he is looking for another answer and a different drilling is what he was saying mainly. I don't think he's necessarily looking for a new ball but more a drilling that would tame his style down.

While I do use my thumb, the problem sounds familiar. I have/had too many revs for my ball speed. Ball really snapped on the backends too hard and was uncontrollable at times.

One thing that helped me was getting the ball onto the lane earlier and hitting THROUGH the ball instead of UP the ball. Ball clears the heads much better, hits harder and is much more predictable.
