Anyone bored and wanna help me out? (Advice about everything)
« on: January 25, 2004, 06:36:25 AM »
Okay to start off I have bowled since I was probably 5 or 6 but never got very serious.  Well I'm 22 and and am starting to get back into the groove of things and want to learn more about the game and get a little more serious.  I started bowling without the thumb years ago but I'm guessing that isn't a very great idea huh?  I have been told I have alot of potential if I learned about boards and marks and so on.  I average around 180 without absolutely no coaching and basically not being real consistent setup wise and actually picking marks to hits.  I like to crank the balls I'm not much of a finesse bowler.  Anyway a few questions to start I guess...  Should I learn to throw my strike ball with a thumb or is it more common than I think to only use 2 fingers?  Any good balls I should try?(I have been told the lanes I normally bowl at are very oily and cost isn't much of a factor)  Do most have a spare ball and a strike ball?  Any other advice some of you better bowlers would give me?  Thanks in advance to all of you...

Wow.  I love your attitude.  Unfortunately your questions are very difficult as you are just starting and I cannot see you bowl or anything.  You don't happen to be from Michigan, are ya?

Would love to help!  One thing though, be sure to use your thumb.  Another thing to keep in mind is that the simplest motion is the easiest to repeat.  Repetition is one of the most important parts of competetive bowling.  So much to learn for you, as it sounds.

Good luck out there and have fun learning!

Yeah I know the "basics" so to speak but golf and basketball have consumed my life the past 15 years and I havent had much of a chance to realyl get into bowling.

I figured it would be hard to answer my questions so maybe this would be easier.  I'm not extremely strong so how much of a difference is there between a 14, 15 and 16 pund ball?  Should I throw a 14 or try to learn with a heavier one?  Also is there different ways to get a ball drilled as in how far your fingers go into the holes etc.  I have been reading other posts on here and everyone here seems to be awesome when it comes to helping out and all that so that's why I decided to sign up and post.  FYI I live in Alliance, OH Brian.

If you've been throwing it without your thumb for a few years, you must have some strength. Have you just been picking a ball off the racks and throwing it?
Unless you're 5'6" or under or weight less than 140 lbs, I'd suggest a 15 lb ball. I'd also say use all 3 fingers. Next join a league and ask some of the better local bowlers which is a good local pro shop. Try to get several recommendations. Most centers have a pro shop but it may or may not be the best one. Then go and talk to them. Since you're basiclaly a beginner, one the most important things to do is to get your own ball, so you have the same one all the time. The next most important thing is make sure the ball fits you correctly.

Untill you get a ball that fits you correctly, you'll never know how light or how heavy a ball you can handle.

They can also recommend a good beginner's ball for the lanes you are bowling on AND for your style. These two factors are THE determinants for the ball you buy. (If the pro shop is on the sleazy side, they will try to push an expensive ball on you or one they are trying to get rid of. You may not realize this until later.) They sshould probably ask you to throw a ball or two; so they can see how you throw it. If this is your first personal ball, it may be unimportant to throw the ball, especially if this is your first ball with a thumb hole you will use.

Next ask them to recommend a good local PROFESSIONAL coach. You may think you know the basics, but I think you'll be surprised at what you do and don't know. Pay for the first two or three lessons. The cost may shock you, but you are paying for their knowledge and their ability to make you understand what they are talking about and for their success rate. In long run, the cost will pay for itself, if they are any good at all.

Next practice what he or she tells you to.

This is the most boring but safest and best path I can recommend, IF YOU ARE SERIOUS.

Like MB said, love the attitude.  You are willing to learn.

Alliance, Oh Mount Union right? I'm from Lima, Oh, and went to ONU
But anyway

Charlest has given you some good advice to start.  You can pm me with
questions, I'll be happy to do what I can, and what I can't do I can
find someone that can.

We may have to meet up sometime and toss a few.
