What would break first?
« on: July 14, 2006, 03:10:57 PM »
With all the abuse I see the house bowling balls and the bowling lanes take at the house I'm bowling at, I am posing the quest what would break first,  the bowling ball or the lane.  I know there is probably a scientific answer to this one, but I would like to know what you think would break first if some one was throw a bowling ball with some air under it down lane and land it on the lane about the same place every time.

The lane... Wood, even synthetics, are softer than most bowling balls out there... Especially if we're talking about house balls.

Ok, so what about high performance balls since they have a softer cover than plastics?

Wood lanes are made from a series of boards (maple in the heads, pine for the rest), set on edge and glued together, resulting in a very strong laminate.  When hit with a ball, they will dent but not break.  I believe the ball would fail first.  I'm not sure about synthetic lanes.  --  JohnP
