What would bring in the most bowlers?
« on: July 17, 2004, 08:16:49 PM »
If you wanted to pump up a scratch league and draw more bowlers and you had $1,000 to spend show would you spend it?
Offer $1,000 for the high set for the year?
Offer $1,000 for high team set for the year? (There is a 200 per man average cap)
Offer $1,000 to the person that can bring in the most new bowlers and sign up under their name? (when they finish the league of course)
Offer $500 in a random drawing to the teams in the last 6 spots in each half?
Think out of the box a little, what would you do?

Ron, if you capped a scratch league at 200 average, you would never get the league going. But, to answer your question, I would put the grand into the prize fund.

Putting the $1000 into the prize fund means each bowler might get $10-$30 per person, depending on # of bowlers.  10-5 person teams would yield $20 per bowler.  I personally think that's wasteful.

I would put the $1000 into a singles tournament at the end of the year.  Invite the top 8 or so averages to compete for it.  It would create a lot of excitement for bowlers trying to get into the top 8.  Pay 4 spots, $500, $250, $125 x 2 (or $150, $100).  Perhaps the center will donate lineage for that week.  Hold the banquet at that center during the week of the tournament so that the other bowlers can watch and maybe even bet on who wins or draw for horses.

I'd throw the extra $1000 to the league champions.  Maybe even set up a "tournament" for the top 4 or 8 teams similar to the singles idea MichiganBowling gave.  Since it's a capped league, there's no (legal) way to stack a team.  The "bring in new bowlers" idea is good and it would help to build the league for the future.

Set up a medium difficult sport shot for the last night of league.
High team set for the night gets $750; 2nd high gets $250.

OR

If there were man-to-man or match-play points each night of league:
$750 to the person with most match points; $250 for 2nd place.

Magic Carpet -- On payoff night, have a scratch singles tournament open only to league members.  All members eligible, but don't have to participate.  Charge a reasonable entry fee and work out regular payout schedule.  For the extra $1000, draw a participant's name every couple of frames.  If the person drawn gets a strike on their next ball, they win $100.  Continue until the money is all won.  If you really want to make it interesting, collect half pot money all year and add that to the $1000 (or put it in the regular prize fund).  --  JohnP

Get the top five guys in the league (in terms of average) at the end of the season, and have them bowl skins for that 1000.

The owner of two of the houses here in town has an interesting gimmick.

At the end of the year he has a tournament, Guaranteed $10,000 prize fund.  League champions (from his house) bowl for free.  $50 entry fee for the other teams.  Entry limited to only the people who have bowled his leagues, teams must have bowled league together, no stacking of teams by mixing and matching.

Both houses are now full.

What we do and it works very well.
We pay more to bowl each week and then put the rest into the prize fund.
We then payout on points won, so the more points you get the more money you walk away with at the end of the year.
We recently had a doubles league which we won by a good margin.
When payout time came we had over £400 ($800)each. That included the sponsership for 1st place and high game and series.
This meant that my season cost me about £70 for the entire season.
As I say if egos are large at the start of the season youll see a lot of people thinking that they can bowl for next to nothing for that year.
It also makes every game worth something even if like us the league was sewn up with 7 weeks to go.
Also a good idea is to keep changing the patterns at regular intervals to stop "one pattern bowlers"
Also a free jackpot is fun too if you have a little more sponsership to add.

I guess some depends on the type of scratch league you are running.

We have a 5 person team scratch league with no cap. As expected many of the best bowlers in town have migrated to 2 or 3 teams. And these same teams dominate the league. It is difficult to recruit new bowlers/teams into the league as they know they are probably going to get crushed by the better teams and they don’t want to be just contributors. The top teams want the prize money stacked on top and the rest of the league want it spread around more.

If you put the extra into the prize fund, hold special tournaments, pay for high average/series etc then the extra money will almost certainly go to the higher teams again. This will not attract new bowlers into the league.

If the league has an average cap then many of those issues change.

I would either look at increasing the guaranteed prize money by so much a team. If you had 10 teams guarantee $100 to each team plus the normal pool.

Or you could hold a special tournament at the end of the year for the bottom half teams. You could pay $400, $300, $200, $100. This would reward the lower half teams for sticking out the league and contributing to the overall prize fund.

The key is to entice new bowlers in, not the established scratch league bowlers, and many of the new bowlers will be on the fringe averages to join, at least their first year or two.
