What would u do if you owned a bowling Center
« on: November 12, 2004, 04:11:01 PM »
Well one of these days i will have my own bowling center.

But my Ideal center would have  about 60lanes, nice restaurant/bar, excellent proshop with someone in the house at all times to service someone.   I would want to have the best oiling machines like a Kegel or custodian.

as for the leagues i would want to have one nice Classic league that bowls on a variety of oil patterns. Probably holding this league on a Thursday, and then have the usual assortment of leagues through out the week.

I would want to talk to ABC and see about having Nationals held at my bowling center within the yr of having it open'd and then see about having it held there every 5th yr.

As for the shot that is put out, to hell with the cake shots.
I would make the gutters max depth, and make the sides so they dont bounce off so much.    The shot would probably be like a 40ft light oil, pretty flat yet score-able,  something like first 15ft 20units of oil gutter to gutter, then 10units of oil to 40ft from 5-5, with the bare 3units on the last 3 boards.   And i would probably use Twister Pins

I would probably want synthetic lanes, with wood approaches.

Now for prices for open bowling, i have always been a person for the bowlers, and feel everyones pain when it comes to paying outragous prices.

I would probably set a rate of 2$ per game at nite, and 1.50$ per game during the day.    and have special rates for league bowlers like 1$ all the time.

I am sure the list can go on and on about things i would have in this place.

He isn't neccessarily going to go bankrupt, cus you simply don't know. However, This is quite an ambitious undertaking. A house that big is going to be very difficult to run, but best of luck to you. Let me know when it opens!

Here is another thing that needs improved on if you build a center.  The settee area!  Have it big enough to hold a whole teams 4-6 ball roller bags and all the personal items so that you do not have to trip over other peoples equipment when it is your turn to bowl.  Another is ball machine rack that can hold enough equipment so you do not have a half dozen balls under the machine for people to trip over them.

These are a few things that I would incorporate into a center IF I ever had enough money to build one.

This one would be easy. I don't know about making things perfect like the Brunswick ProLane and the private party lanes, but there are a few things that I would like to do.

No alcohol consumption outside of the bar, which includes the lanes. Bowling is a athletic activitiy, and alcohol and athletic activities don't mix.

No smoking in the center (if I wasn't in Florida and California). I would actually go all the way and paint a red circle 20 feet away from the whole center so people won't smoke anywhere near my damn center.

You know me, I want a big, giant pro shop, with it's own lane or two.  We have joked about that.  I would have an odd lane  #61 and have it seperated by a few feet, just for pro shop use.  Lessons with CATS, video, etc.....

Aaahhhh hitting the lottery!!!

Off topic, but similar to your post.

I called AMF and Brunswick how much these get done for, out of curiousity and for when I win the lottery. Including a building (and the licensing stuff), it would be like buying small-average house in the SF Bay Area.... that's for two new lanes, set of equipment, masking, scoring, installation, etc. Maybe a few hundred grand.

Oh yeah, it doesn't include that $30,000 Kegel Sanction Elite machine you want, and the amount of oil you are going to buy from them ($125/gallon for oil, and I don't know for cleaner).

I plan on winning the lottery soon, so when It happens, there will be a party at my place. Signups are being taken now.

You can actually buy a 4 lane set up thru Neiman-marcus. At the ripe old
tune of $500,00.00 Check out their new catalog, I am not kidding.

Cheap bowling for everyone, id only charge 10 bucks an hour. You figure most of your income would come from the bars, am I right or wrong? How many people pay 20 bucks for leagues but pay 10 bucks for beer 3 times.. Theres money from league..

First and foremost, customer service.  Make the customer feel like you really care about them and that you appreciate their business.

One simple and cheap suggestion.

Install towel bars and trays on the settee console to hold bowler paraphernalia.

If I had a bowling center, I would set it on fire and collect the insurance...bowling is dead.

The joke going at Shore Crest Lanes in Michigan is "So Vern (or Bob), when are you going to burn the place down again?"

On friday nights, they have the premier league that my dad used to bowl in.
I went there one time and hear this drunk guy yell "hey Vern, the shot is sh!t today, think its time to burn it down again?"
Vern just looks at the guy with an evil eye and then looks the other way without saying anything.

So far, in a 30 year span, its burned down twice. Kinda fishy, and boy is that place SH!T! They refuse to oil for anything but a few leagues, and it seems like whenever the owners let this place get really bad, they burn it down, so we're just waiting!
