Ball Recommendations Please
« on: November 09, 2003, 05:04:29 PM »
I have been using a Storm Eraser Blaze for the past nine months or so.  I purchased this ball since several people recommended it saying it was a good first ball to learn how to throw a hook with.  Now that I am getting more proficient with my release I would like a stronger ball.  I am low to medium in revs and medium in speed.  I am looking for a more aggressive ball because I want to start to learn how to play different lines to the pocket.  With my current ball, I am limited to the more direct lines.  I should mention that in both houses that I bowl in, the lanes are medium oil and walled up.  From time to time, they do get dry but I figure I can always switch back to my Eraser Blaze if they dry up too much.  If any more information would help anyone recommend a ball, please feel free to ask.

Thanks,
Ryan

P.S. I do not want the biggest baddest hook monster out there either, but something between what I have now and a hook beast

Go with the Inferno. Great med. oil ball. Has good carry and a decent hook

the original X-Factor is great on medium condition and the Blaze was just recommended by Steve Kloempken Storm's Technical Director as a compliment to my X-Factor for when the lanes start to dry up, so they would work well together.

I too have medium speed and medium revs.

I bowl on a long (42') medium shot and I can play between 14-15 at arrow and 7-9 at break point and 17-18 at arrows and 9-11 at break with it. By the third game it is actually too much ball for me due to pattern changes.

I have also tried a Deuce on this condition but it didn't carry as well due to burning up too much energy getting to the backend.

Thanks for the help so far.  I found this auction on Ebay for a used Inferno, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3637206223&category=36105

How does getting a ball plugged and redrilled affect its performance?  Are there any specs missing from the auction listing that I should ask the seller for prior to bidding?  And finally, what would be a fair price for a lightly used Inferno?

Thanks again!!

Alto,

You should be aware that the Inferno should, in general, be able to handle medium to medium-heavy amounts of oil. The Inferno (and the X-factor recommended above) will approximately as long as the Blaze, under normal circumstances, but with a stronger, more pronounced backend; in fact the Inferno has one of the strongest backends currently available. The Blaze is a ball intended to handle medium-light to medium amount of oil, but its actual performance depends on your release and delivery style.

Also, the amount of hook is not related to a ball's ability to handle oil. In fact, in general, most balls intended for heavy oil will hook less than true hook monsters like the Inferno, which is intended for medium to medium-heavy oil patterns.

A used Inferno, in great shape, (do not always believe an ebay seller about the condition of a ball!) should go for no more than $50-60 delivered to your house, if you are within the 48 states.

A plugged ball should be almost indistinguishable in performance from a new ball, even if 1 or 2 of the plugs are in your track, AND IF the plugging and re-drilling are done correctly. Personally I'd prefer to have no more than 2 of the plugs near my track, but that is my perference. Many people have found balls to perform great even when they have been plugged twice and drilled 3 times. It all depends on the ball and the quality of the work.

Thanks again for the help so far.  When I go to buy a new ball, leaning towards the Inferno at this point, what should I look for as far as top weight or pin placement?  I am a novice with these terms so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
