What would you charge?
« on: May 22, 2008, 03:39:19 AM »
O.K. so a guy has called me that I know very well and wants me to drill balls for him this weekend about 3 hours away from where I stay. He wants me there from 9am to about 6pm that day. What do you think is far to charge for the services. And I also have never used a vacuum jig (AMF) with a digital pitch gage. My press is old and my jig is manual so I have to climb that mountain also. Anyway just some input on what you would charge. I figure gas will be about $ 80.00 (245 miles round trip) and then eating for the day probably $25.00 to $30.00. And does anyone know where I might can find a instructional vidoe online on how to operate that jig?

Charge 500 bucks.

I have no clue.  I don't operate a pro shop, but I would say like, like, 200-250 would be nice.

I would tell him that you have never used that jig before, and if  he still
wants you to do it I would charge, gas, and dinner, and get the experience.

Is this the beginning of a longterm employment relationship? How many balls will you be drilling? Will you be working in a proshop drilling anyone's balls that come in that day?

Talk to the guy and explain to him your expenses, and ask him what he thinks would be fair in addition to your expenses of 110 bucks.

If you drill 2 balls each hour, on average, that would be 16 to 18 balls. At a minimum, a pro shop is going to charge 30 bucks to punch holes in a ball, most charge more.  16 x 30 = 480. It would seem fair that you take one half of the amount, in light of your expenses. So, 240 total at a minimum. If he charges more per ball, use the same formula or something similar.

If he says he only wants to pay you 150 bucks or so, including your expenses, tell him what you have to have as a minimum, and if the two of you can't come to an agreement, politely tell him you would rather not do it.

Another way to look at it is to say that you will have 15 hours of your time invested, 6 driving, 9 working. 10 bucks an hour plus expenses is cheap. You still end up at around 250 total.

My gut, 300 bucks, flat fee, if its a one time deal.

As far as the charges I would have no idea.  But for the AMF vacu jig just make sure that you have a jar of vasoline and some larger rubber bands and some scotch tape the tape is used for when the lettering on the balls line up to the o-ring gasket of the vacuum.  if you can't get the pressure to come up use just a bit of vasoline around the seal usually does the trick. as far as the digital pitch guages the rest of the table still moves by hand.

It depends.  Is this a business deal or are you doing a favor for a friend?  If it's a business deal, $400 - $500.  If it's a favor, whatever you think covers your out of pocket expenses plus $50 or so.  --  JohnP

Well it sounds like you own or work in a pro shop.  If so,  you have to factor in the loss of your own sales.  Plus your time to and from, plus gas food etc.

I guess the final answer is up to you.  How much is your time worth, and how much business will your own shop lose if your gone that day.

Your friend is asking you to work 8 hours. How many balls can you drill (max) in 8 hours? Just trying to figure what your friend can earn as a result of your help! Sounds logical that he's not going to pay YOU more then he can earn from your services! What am I missing???

Joe -- You're not missing anything.  But this will occupy 15 hours of his time, six hours driving and nine working.  If it's a business deal he deserves to be fairly compensated.  Of course, it could work out to be just too expensive for his friend.  --  JohnP
