What would you do if you found out this about a teammate?
« on: March 14, 2005, 04:44:29 AM »
I was talking with a friend over the weekend. She told me that a teammate was overheard saying he wasn't going to be trying very hard this round in the scratch league, because he wanted to get/keep his average down so he'd fit with someone else on another team next year.

We talked about the possible actions to be taken by the team captain:
1. leave it alone.
2. Talk to the bowler and let them know it would be causing him a big problem if he kept it up.
3. Kick the bowler off the team

Any other ideas?

I would simply talk to the bowler in private and express the view that sandbagging is cheating and no one wants a cheater on there team. Most people say things but never end up doing them. Sometimes just letting them understand the issue is enough and nothing more needs to be done.

Considering this is a case of someone heard someone say...I think you should talk to the team mate to find out what is going on before blindly booting the guy off the team.  His struggle could be legit and he was making a joke about why he was bowling bad.

I've bowled on a capped scratch league and it still doesn't matter. If the guy's "jaking" in order to jump to another team and I find out about it, there's trouble. Sandbaggers are b*tches epsecially if there hurting your team for their own benefit and you don't mess with others' money, mine included.

This league has an average cap of 850 for 4.
And I believe the story, because that explains the otherwise unexplainable spare misses by a mile kind of things...

3.  Kick the bowler off the team.

What happens if it comes down to HIS frame that could put your team in first place but would rather keep his average low?

I've bowled with a joker like that.  He purposely flubbed a shot which cost us 2nd place but it kept his average under cap.

I don't recall him getting any payout money for that stunt.

Those who have already said to question the bowler directly are right-on.  If your teammate doesn't feel this way at all, but is only the victim of hearsay, kicking him/her off the team is unfair.

If your teammate affirms the hearsay, and that approach is not in keeping with the team's goals, the teammate should be invited to leave if his/her attitude doesn't change.  So, if your team's goals are and have been to do your best and try to win first place, any intentional wrecking of scores, especially to benefit another team regardless of the reason, is unfair to the team.

I had to reply to the replies. I DON'T SANDBAG!!!! LET ME SAY THAT AGAIN. I DON'T SANDBAG!!!!! And I know many that don't. However, I can honestly say that I can point out about twenty guys on my Thursday night mens league that do and they do it obvious! The fact that the majority of the responses to this subject were anti-sandbagging reminds me of an old saying. I only trust two people in the world. You and me and I am not too sure about you!!! LOL!!!!

I want to hear from someone that will be honest and say, "I AM A SANBAGGER". The first step to mental health is admitting you have a problem!!! Who has the bowling balls to admit it??????

Gee, Nicanor comes back and we have a post about sandbagging.  j/k

Seriously, I agree with janderson.  Find out what's going on for sure, then deal with it.  If it's true, level with him and find a replacement.  Let him sandbag on his own time/money.  Scratch leagues are too expensive and competitive to have dead weight.
