mid season slump
« on: January 19, 2004, 10:55:25 PM »
Any suggestions on how to break out of a slump?  I started the season averaging about 10 pins higher than I am now, which is also about 5 pins under my average from last year.  The biggest problem seems to be carry.  I can't seem to get a string of more than 3 or 4 to get me over the edge without some pin from the back row killing my momentum.  My teammates tell me I'm trying too hard.  This is the longest slump I've had in my 20 years of bowling.  Any advice?

Yeah, quit trying so hard!  I did this a while back... Started strong, then dropped my avg through Oct and Nov down to like 182 in one league.  Found it again, and in the month of Dec alone have brought that avg. back up to 197!  Not sure what I'm doing differently, but things are going well now.

I found once I started doing bad, I overanalyzed everything.  Instead, just focus on keeping your approach and delivery in time and consistant, and the rest should fall in line.  Good Luck!

Many coaches will tell you to go "back to basics".

I was in the same position as you earlier this year - in the worst slump of my entire life.  What ended my slump was fixing the span on my equipment (it was too long) which fixed my release.

Your span might not be the problem, but it is an example of something basic that can be checked.  Good luck, hope you end your slump soon.
