Amateurs ?
« on: February 24, 2008, 10:51:21 PM »
Definition from Webster.

Main Entry:
am•a•teur
Pronunciation:
\ˈa-mə-(ˌtər, -ˌtu̇r, -ˌtyu̇r, -ˌchu̇r, -chər\

One who engages in a pursuit, study, science, or sport as a pastime rather than as a profession.

When are we going to quit calling these bowlers who bowl full time, for money, and make their living as bowling “amateurs”?

Not just the international players but team USA and others in the USA.

The only thing is that they are not members of the PBA but they are not amateurs.

Bowling has always had a blurred line but these bowlers are well beyond the line.

Yeah, you've got a point here. Some of these guys have had worldwide experience and have bowled for even bigger bucks than the PBA has to offer, so it seems a bit strange to call them amateurs. I guess maybe the distinction comes from the fact that some of them don't technically call bowling their profession. But then again, most if not all of the PBA guys have jobs outside of the tour as well, so even that line is blurred.

Team USA is no longer for amatures only.  If you look at this year there were only 2 guaranteed spots through the qualifiers, one male and one female top finisher.  Then they could chose another spot from the participants at large.  The remaining spots were given to PBA members, ex PWBA members, and some other chosen few.
