Selection Of Two People To New Positions Brings The USBC Management Structure Into Clearer Focus
December 2, 2004
Greendale, Wis. – United States Bowling Congress Chief Executive Officer Roger Dalkin has announced two new appointments to the USBC.

Dalkin selected Jan Schmidt as USBC Director of Marketing and Sales and Jeff Henry as Director of Sport. Both begin their new positions Jan. 1.

Schmidt has spent the past 16 months as Women’s International Bowling Congress director of tournaments and marketing. Henry has served as a Bowling Inc. Shared Services vice president since 1997.

The selections were part of USBC’s continued commitment to making decisions in a timely manner. This included the selection of Dalkin by the USBC Board of Directors in October and Dalkin’s naming of Jack Mordini as chief operating officer, Roseann Kuhn as chief tournament officer, Tim Payne as chief information officer and Jim Zebehazy as director of association transition in November.

“This is the next step in consolidating our operations into a cohesive, efficient team,” Dalkin said. “By making these decisions in the manner that we did, USBC truly will be poised to begin operations Jan. 1.”

Dalkin also announced the current executive area people who will not be part of the restructured organization. Because of the new structure, or their personal decisions, the following people will not be moving forward with USBC at this time:

Ed Baur (ABC group executive-tournaments, communications and marketing); Sylvia Broyles (WIBC president); Peter Caprise (Bowling Inc. Shared Services chief financial officer); Mary Costello (ABC executive administrative assistant); Pete Dargiewicz (ABC operations manager); Sheila Nyren (WIBC director of services); Lisa Privatt (Bowling Inc. Shared Services executive administrative assistant); Judy Santarius (WIBC executive administrative assistant); Sue Savetwith (WIBC executive administrative assistant); Michele St. Marie (ABC director of marketing alliances, promotions and events). These are in addition to the previously-announced departures of David Patrick (Bowling Inc. Shared Services chief operating officer) and Amy Mascaro (Bowling Inc. Shared Services vice president).

“We want to extend heartfelt thanks to these people for their long, dedicated service not only to their respective organizations, but also to the merger process,” Dalkin said. “Each of them had a role in helping USBC become a reality and I believe we all need to salute them for the dedication and sacrifices they have made.”

Nyren will continue to work under a contract with USBC to assure the successful completion of WIBC’s Bowl for the Cure® program and the WIBC Convention in Tulsa, Okla., in April.

“One of the commitments USBC made was to flatten out the organization at the executive level,” Dalkin said. “We had a group of about 28 people three years ago. Over the past two or three years, three positions have been absorbed through retirements or elimination so were at about 25 on Nov. 1.”

Dalkin said the executive level reductions will result in a savings of nearly $1.3 million in salaries and benefits once severance packages have been completed. That’s nearly $300,000 in additional savings above the $1 million estimated in the proposal approved by ABC and WIBC delegates and the Young American Bowling Alliance and USA Bowling boards of directors in May.

The United States Bowling Congress will merge the American Bowling Congress, Women’s International Bowling Congress, Young American Bowling Alliance and USA Bowling into one organization beginning Jan. 1. It will create an organization with approximately three million members. USBC has applied to the United States Olympic Committee to replace USA Bowling as the national governing body for bowling.

Jan will "do" the job - Dave will do the "commentary".
