How many of you change the covers on pearls say down to 2or 1k for a better reaction? What changes work the best for most pearls and solids? Mainly for house shots.

I usually don't go down to 1K on a pearl unless it has a cover that grabs early. Like the Omega Crux from a few years ago. Otherwise for me it usually just creates overlap with something else in my bag. Of course I have a lot of stuff and rotate it frequently so it would be different for someone looking to work with an arsenal of two or three balls.

The pearls I do tend to add surface too are those with higher RG cores and moderately strong covers. Like the original Honey Badger. They usually go a bit too long for me and end up with a lot of over/under reactions.

From what I have learned recently; 3000 is the wheelhouse for putting surface to a pearl cover. If you go more than that; then you take away from what the ball was designed to do. What is going to end up happening; is you are going to sand down to 1000 or 2000 and then you are going to encounter a time where you need that pearl at its OOB surface. IMO; the best thing to do is save up the money and buy a ball that compliments that pearl that is designed to read the lane sooner. It is best to have 3 balls for league (one that hooks earlier on oil, one that goes longer and backends harder, and one for when the lanes really burn up and can still use for spares if you do not have a plastic spare ball).

EX: Phaze 2, Phaze 5, Tropical Surge....or..
EX: Phaze 2, Phaze 5, Electrify or Hustle Wine, plastic spare ball.

I did touch the surface of mine very lightly with a 1000 grit pad by hand just to knock the initial shine off because for me the OOB covers are just alittle too clean. Nick Smith

I am not the only one that adjust pearls at lower grit

All the time. Anything polished for me makes a house shot play like a sport pattern. Way too sensitive to anything to be useful.

Typically anything with polish pearl, hybrid, or solid i will use 2000 grit on. I have used lower depending on the condition but usually I have other equipment better suited for that. I also sand my plastic ball with 2000 when purchased new and then touch it up on a occasion when it starts to shine up too much. This helps control the skid of the ball better for me on spares and getting it to roll vs sliding 60'
