Whats more important
« on: November 18, 2011, 11:34:13 AM »
Good timing, good fit, or a combination of both?

After six games of practice yesterday, I was really frustrated because I couldn't find any consistency. One of the guys who works in the pro shop said that my "Hit" was different every time.

I would say that a good fit is essential for good timing.   If your squeezing too hard trying to hold on to an ill fitting ball, your timing and swing are going to be terribly inconsistent.

I hate pro shop guys that make comments like that without offering up a reason as to why your hit was different everytime.

Guy in my place always makes comments about my falling off the shot at the end.  He doesn't ever offer any advice on how to eliminate or minimize the falling off.  I know I do it, it's consistent and it happens because I have knee and hip problems that don't allow me to finish properly at the line.

+1.  Good fit helps timing.  Also having the proper ball weight is essential for timing.  All of these together work hand in hand.

Both are important, but they may be unrelated to your spraying the ball around.
Two possible solutions for that are:-
1/. Hold your release position on the line longer.
2/. Slow down - try holding the ball lower in your stance and push away at about a 45% angle.

This.  Coaching advise isn't.  "Timings late."  Coaching advise is "your pushaway is late causing you to fall off of our shot."   Whats causing the problem or a sound way to fix it is the only thing worth listening to.  Not being captain obvious.

I have bad knees.  I had balance problems when starting from the front set of dots.  My knees would make me step to the side on one of my steps, causing me to not end up where I wanted.  I move up about 3 feet on the approach.  I take much smaller steps and they are slower, so I can keep in time.  The next thing I practiced was balance at the line.  If you hop or have to step to the side to catch your balance, then you are moving your feet too fast.  If you are pulling your shots a lot, the you are moving your feet too fast.  Take a day or two of practice and work on just staying firm at the line.  It will make a dramatic improvement in your shot consistency.

When I had my center I would bowl with anything on the rack at the time during testing.  My timing has been pretty good.  The old saying goes you can not out coach a bad fit.  Any one can throw a ball in time with practice.  Making score is another matter.  The ball has to fit or several bad things happen and effecting timing is just one.

+1 from here, too. The good fit's (including hole size, pitches, ball weight) selling point is that when you hand hold and handle the ball with little effort you are much more relaxed, and this makes good and consistent(!) timing much easier than permanent struggling with the ball. The dreaded "Kung Fu Death Grip" can be one result, as well as excessive loft, late thumb exit upon release (way after the effective leverage point in the downswing phase), coming around the ball, and other very fundamental flaws. A good fit does not make you a better bowler, here is timing a much more important asset, but it is nevertheless a vital prerequisite for good and consistent results with little wear and tear on the body.

I actually disagree to an extent.  Yes a horrible fit is bad, but timing isn't dependent on your fit.  You can have the best fit in the world, but if you're late and grabbing at it at the bottom of the swing, the fit isn't helping.  However you can have a mediocre fit and still throw it good because your timing is solid and good fundamentals.  Changing the way your hand sits in the ball won't make the ball get to the flat spot at a different time.
