How do I choose a new bowling ball?
« on: December 30, 2009, 01:24:13 PM »
I am currently bowling with a 16-lbs Brunswick Pro Active Zone that I purchased in 1999.  I average around 185 in the league I am in, but we have several bowlers who average over 200.  I am a right-handed bowler that stands just to the left of the second arrow from the left and aim for the second arrow from the right.  While I don't have a huge hook, I usually get decent pin action, even if I hit the pocket right.  If I swing my arm to the left my ball usually goes Brooklyn.  My bowling seems to be very streaky at times.

I have been looking at getting a new bowling ball for a while, but things have changed in the past ten years since I got my most recent ball.  (I had a Beast and Angle before that.)  I would like to get something that would provide me with more hook when going into the pocket.

The Virtual Gravity seems to be the ball of choice from the pro shop inside the establishment I bowl at (and it is owned by a PBA Tour member, so I know that the pro shop knows a good deal about equipment).  What other balls should I be looking at?  Is there any other information you need from me to get a better idea for a ball for me?

Any help would be appreciated.  Also, if this is in the wrong section, please feel free to move it to the appropriate area.

Thanks to all the helpful responses.

My wife did have someone from the Pro Shop watch me bowl at league one night when I didn't know.  They weren't really sure what would be best for me, I'm guessing partially because they didn't know what I was looking for.  My wife wanted to get it for me as a Christmas gift.

I will go in to talk to the guys at the Pro Shop sometime, but I wanted to get some idea beforehand of what balls were out there and what to look for.  I am pretty thorough when I want to get something and I want to try to make the best decision I can.  That's why I didn't go out and purchase the VG right away.  I know that it's hard to get an idea of what kind of shot I throw and what I'm looking for, but getting user feedback is helpful.  That's why I wanted to post on here.

Yes you can go to the pro shop guys for their recommendation. First you must find someone that you trust. Going from an old ball that is a little flat to a super hooking ball might be a little much. I would look in to a mid range solid to start they are the most versatile and the covers are easy to adjust. Good Luck!

I would stay away from the VG as well unless you really just want to dump the ball onto the alley and let it roll up.  For me ( med to higher rev player) this ball is junk.  The only guys I see who make this ball work are guys who kind of fluff the ball off their hand up 7 and into the pocket.  I will say that the VG does seem to hit very hard when it gets to the hole.

The VG needs oil and a bowler that is slightly speed dominant.  When everything matches up it's a very impressive ball.  --  JohnP
