Are X-out balls any good?
« on: October 19, 2004, 07:10:56 AM »
I'm looking at buying a new ball and I see a few places selling X-out balls claiming they're just as good as a first rate ball but stating that one or all of these are the reasons it's an X-out:
-COLOR PIGMENTATION
-SMALL PITTING CAUSED BY AIR BUBBLES
-UNIQUE PIN PLACEMENT, TOP WEIGHT, OR BOMB LOCATION
But these are Non-performance issues so they claim.

Is this correct or should I stay away from X-out balls?
Thanks for any help.

there are good ones and bad ones

i have used alot and stiull do

color and engraving mistakes are the best-as with 1/2 weights

very long pins and low/high tops are not as good

if the deal is good on the first mentioned ones-go for it.

you can get them for about 1/2 off

The first two mentioned are ok definitely color blems if thats all, that just means its not the proper color or improper logos and even some air bubbles can be ok.  Pin and top and bomb locaton can be ok as long as its not too bad 5 and 6 inch pin out might be ok but further than that can make it tricky and sometimes you can just drill out the extra top wieght but then limits your drill pattern(not sure of really low tops).  It really depends on how bad of an x-out it is.  I mean if someone was just a casual bowler or straight bowler then nothing would matter.  When buying an x-out try to get exact specs from someone before hand so you can see how extreme your problems may or may not be.

First ball out of my bag right now is a blem.  Silver Streak Solid, marked with a B.  The only thing I can see wrong with the ball is a slight white line extending about 1 inch out of the pin - looks almost like a crack, but it's a pigmentation flaw.  So, as 1Fife said, color and engraving mistakes = no problem.  Long (or short) pin = no problem IF YOU know what to do with it.  For some drills very short pins might be just the ticket.  Same for high or low top wts. - avoid them unless you know what you're doing.  I'd avoid anything with pitting however.
