Looking for a little more Slide...(without using powder)
« on: October 13, 2011, 02:15:10 AM »
I was really sticking on the approaches this past Friday while bowling in league. Right lane was worse than left.

I own a pair of Dexters. I use the #8 sole and #7 heel. I have a #10 sole but it feels like I am on ice when using it, so I thinking of cutting one my  #8 soles and inserting  cut #10 in its place.

Do I just cut them in half? Back and Front, front #8 and back #10 or reverse. How about right and left? Or do I go diagonally?

Just looking to get that little more slide. Has anyone had success at this?

Slide sock. If you slide too much, you can use it upside down or inside out to cut the slide. Also, since part of the shoe sole is exposed, changing soles can modify the amount of slide as well.

If you go break the s10 in open bowling it should slide less. At least it did for me. When I put a new one on it is like bowling on ice for about 6 games then it is perfect. I just switch back and forth between a 10 and an 8 depending on synthetic(10) vs wood(8) approaches.

+1...I wouldn't cut them up unless you have no other choice. S8-S10 combo is all I really ever use.

Thanks for the replies. I really rely on being able to slide. When I don't, my bowling is bad and most often my knee is hurting at the end of the night. What was so strange that night in particular, everything was okay in the first game. The right lane was sticking a little but nothing real bad. Then the 4th frame in 2nd game I came to complete stop in middle of my slide, almost went out on the lanes.

From that point on I was concentrating more on my slide or lack of one, instead of how I was throwing. Very frustrating.

Tried the 10 Sole and it was too much slide.  I just couldn't get in that comfort zone for the rest of the night.

I will work on breaking in my 10 sole, but I still might look into these socks. Any specific brand to reccomend?

I am currently using the Brunswick one. The AMF one is good too. The Ebonite one was too small for me.

trash......   A lot of things contribute to a sticky approach!!

#1    It coud be sticky

#2    It could be your soles (check 'em)

#3    It could be your heel (Look at the forward edge of your sliding heel)

#4    It could be you are trying to slide too early on the appoach , (this is a biggy)  A lot of people try to slide  early, right in the area a lot of people are laying down heel rubber

I like to slide a lot too.  I used to use a Linds Exxxtra because it had a puck system that I could buy teflon pucks for.  Later, thanks to Charlest, I started making my own.  When I was looking for a newer pair of shoes, I did not see a puck system in the Dexters, so I passed on them, but I did see one with the 3G Tour Ultras.  Unfortunately, their teflon pucks are way too thin and do not last long.  However, using the tips I got from Charlest, I found it easy to make my own for those.  Now, I rarely have problems with the approaches, even when others are complaining of sticking.  If you can find a way to make or buy some teflon for your Dexters, that may be a solution, but it would have to be a partial teflon sole only.  I would think a 100% teflon sole would be way too slick.

Trick I was taught years ago. You can put just a little super glue along the leading edge and back as far as you need to get the slide you want. The original Linds heels had an acetate coating that was removed after bowlers styles changed back years ago. The super glue can be used to create this same really slick rubber heel. For me it was edge and maybe 1/4" but warning it is a lot slicker once you put this on if you go too far.

Well I finally found a solution. It cost me $73.00 to figure this all out. I bought two #8 Soles and one #10 sole. I was going to cut the soles into pieces. By looking at the sole I currently had on my shoe I could tell where most of the wear was on the sole. It was most about a 2 inch wide strip. My thought process was thinking this is the area where I am sticking the most.

Went to the lanes on Tuesday. I cut a #8 sole into three pieces. The middle piece was the that 2 inch area. Then did the same for a #10 sole. I tried some things. In order from toe (Front) to back of sole. I was using a #7 heel with this.

1st combination: #8 (Front), #8 (Middle), #8(Back) - This was like a control. This is a new sole, so I though now that I have separated what would be like. Some slide, but stopping too quick.

2nd combination: #8(Front), #10(Middle), #8(Back) - I thought this was going to be what I needed. My slide was a little more but I was still stopping very quickly. Upon investigation, the #10 sole is thinner that the #8. The stopping was because I was hitting the edge of the #8 back piece.

3rd combination:   #8(Front), #10(Middle, #10(Back) - I RECCOMEND NOT TRYING THIS. I had no traction. TOO MUCH SLIDE! I came close to falling down, but was very fortunate to regain my balance.

4th combination: #10(Front), #8(Middle), #10(Back) - Did not like it. Slide was not good, plus all steps I used with that shoe in my approach were not good since the #10 was on the front.

2nd Combination was the best of the four, unfortunately it wasn't good enough. I was very angry, spending this money, cutting these soles up, and not solving my slide issue.

I ordered a Slide Sock on Wednesday Morning (I haven't received it yet). I was thinking this is my next to last option, last option is to buy new shoes.

Well I go back to the lanes on Wednesday night. I thinking of cutting these soles into more smaller pieces trying different combinations. Then I thought of something. I have a few used #8 soles (the old yellow ones) I have as backup just incase (They work if you use some powder on them). Looking at them they are close to the thickness of the #10 felt sole. I cut one and put it on.

THAT WAS IT!!! I was getting the slide I needed. It took a worn down #8 Sole on the back to make this work. It seems very little of it touches the lane, but it is enough to let me slide and have control.

Sole Combination of #8 (Front), #10 (Middle), Old Worn #8 (Back) with a #7 Heel

If Dexter would have their soles all the same thickness, I sure you could get creative, and find a good combination to acheive the perfect slide. My solution is good (definitely a big improvement), but could it be better. I know there is room for improvement but I just can't keep spending money on soles.

Sorry for the long reply, but I thought I would share my results with the site.

What I tried on a heel was adding holes to an H7 heel (red leather), for some more resistance in order to close the gap to the H5 rubber heels. Copied the trick Dexter did with the (now discontinued) S7 sole, which was basically a S8 with perforation - and it yielded a slight difference.

Not certain if this would work on a S10 sole, since it is VERY slippery?
