When conditions are too easy......
« on: July 13, 2004, 09:23:53 PM »
Do you guys prefer high scoring or tougher conditions?

In my league we have a few decent-ish but only a couple that are real high end bowlers. One averages 213 but gets a bit of help being one of only a handfull of lefties. When he bowls in tourneys that have tougher conditions he always fails to cash.

However our new season started yesterday and he bowled an 815,I bowled an 717 and my team-mate bowled a 705.The margin for error was huge and this was due to an easy pattern that has been put down to help guys ( Such as Mack and Torgeson ) to score heavily when they come to my center for a tourney.

I personally do not like it when conditions become too easy as It makes it harder to tell who is and is not a good bowler. Am I alone is being in favour of tougher/sport conditions?

I would have got away with it if it was not for those pesky kids (Behind my lane) and those blasted 10 pins.

I agree  we had an all star tournament in St.louis this past weekend and I was +319 for 10 games including a 300 and finished 17TH!. I would rather bowl on 50 ft. flat shot than bowl in a carry contest anyday.

Most want a condition that is easy for them but tough for everyone else.

I want a condition that rewards good shots and punishes bad ones. The rub comes into defining what constitutes a good shot. But overall my standards would be towards tougher conditions.

I think it makes a mockery of the sport.

I prefer a condition which puts a premium on accuracy rather than carry as you said.I mean I bowled what should have been closer to a 650 as I had not been bowling for a few weeks but to have one pocket 10 pin deny me a 300 and bowl a 717 on the first week when I was not bowling at my best just makes me cringe.

I talked to my mate who bowled the 800 and commented on the fact that he bowled rubbish at a tourney the week before and he said "Well it was a sports shot and I have not had enough experience on that condition!".

Proves my point really,if he was good enough he would be able to bowl on whatever was put in front of him.I may not be world class bowler but at least I know I can ave 200+ on whatever condition is put in front of me.

I would have got away with it if it was not for those pesky kids (Behind my lane) and those blasted 10 pins.

I would lean toward tougher conditions...
That said, supernoodle, your buddy that shot 800 may very well have a point.
If you can't practice on the tougher conditions, there's no way you can be ready to compete on the tougher conditions. If nothing else, from a confidence level.

Folks on this board say that you can practice different lines on a house shot - and that is certainly true. What a tough shot gives you is IMMEDIATE feedback - not just on hitting your target, but ball speed, quality of release, and all those other things that make a good bowler great.

I thought I could practice tough shot bowling on a house shot, too. But I found out differently in competition. Very expensive competition. This summer I'm ONLY bowling a sport league, and practicing on tough conditions (preferably sport) whenever I get a chance.

The thing is once you get to a certain standard you know what "Might" be put in front of you in terms of a condition. You should be good enough to be able to a) Tell to a certain extent what the condition is and b) You should be able to adjust accordingly.

I mean all you need to do is be able to throw a couple of balls to be able to tell what is going on and what is needed as you can see whats happening.
I would have got away with it if it was not for those pesky kids (Behind my lane) and those blasted 10 pins.

I do not mind leaving a tournament knowing I threw the ball well even if I struggled and only averaged 170-180.

I bowled in a benefit tournament at the start of the year at the walled up house of Ohio. 195 300 games shot there this past fall/winter season. All of the best bowlers in the area were there. For 5 games I shot 232 over and qualified 8th....and had a 300.

What is really bad about this is that I was not throwing the ball well at all that day. I bowled a tournament near Cleveland and averaged 176 for 6 games, finished in the top few of my squad and felt much better leaving and had much more fun than at the walled up shot.

I would prefer a difficult shot any time over an easy shot. When you are on a challenging shot you see who is bowling well and who isn't. The scores tell you the story. When you bowl on a cake shot the scores are not an indicator at all. A guy shoots 730 easily could have been more on his game than the guy that shoots 800 that night, but as cake shots are known to be....it was a carry contest.

I totally agree with mumzie on this....practice on sport shots or something difficult if you want to get better, practice on house shots helps, but it is really not an indicator.
