When did 300 rings become a joke to wear?
« on: March 04, 2005, 03:36:32 AM »
I'm not old enough to remember when a 300 ring was proudly worn like a badge of honor.  I hear stories that many of these guys were treated with respect for their accomplishment.  Now, I know of guys with multiple rings that don't ever wear any of them.  A teammate of mine has over (50) 300 games, but he admitted that he will never wear a ring.  When did this happen?

I've been around a few bowlers that wore multiple rings that virtually covered every finger.  This illicits 2 completely opposite responses.  Either others are very impressed by this or they laugh at them.  I fall into the laughter category because I'd bet money that I'd beat these guys 9 out of 10 times even before watching him bowl.  So far, I've never been wrong.

What do you think when you see a guy with rings covering his fingers?

Anyone ever notice the color of the 299 stone is the same color your face turns as you lose oxygen and choke on your last shot?

My blue stone epitomizes my entire bowling experience.

As far as the ring on all (many) of their fingers I agree with you and I have never seen a truly elite bowler wear more than a couple.

I would say the rings lost their luster in the late 80’s. With short oil they started throwing honor scores at an elevated pace and you started seeing bowlers without a complete skill set shooting them on a regular basis.

I personally don’t wear any but I don’t wear any jewelry of any kind not even a wedding ring and I’ve been married 33 years. I’ve worked about machinery a lot in my youth and I never got use to something hanging on my hand.

Notice how many will say WHEN I shoot one not IF I shoot one and that is the measure of how far the honor in honor score has dropped.

I just consider it hopeful thinking! I dont want to say 'if' becuase that is the type of attitude that makes you not give it your all. At least for me.

The only 300 ring that I proudly wear is a PBA 300 ring with 2 diamond stones (1 for each PBA 300)... other than that... forget about it with the candy apple shots that are in today's bowling centers... (AKA Helen Keller Open) LOL

But for the people that never shoot a 300 until the 1st one... then yes, wear it with pride.. but after you have a few of them... like the guys with 10 or more (I have 25), it doesn't really matter to guys like us. Not putting anything down on anyone else, we just look at things a little differently.... that's all.

But I wish you all the best of luck in knocking 12 strikes down to get that feeling that most others experience.

Well, I have one of the last real gold (10k) with real ruby and diamond rings awarded for my first 300 game back in the late 70;s. Back then, there was pride to have shot a 300 and sport a 300 ring. And even through most of the 80's it was still a prized award although the awarded rings were fake stones and not real gold. Sometime after I quit in 1990 and my return in 2000 there were many many people that had LOTS of 300's and they became very prevalent.

Well, they're still something of honor for a woman...
I am currently wearing my ladies 300 ring AND my ladies 800 ring.
The ABC ones are in the display case.

I know guys on both ends of the scale. Older guys who wear them on every finger and younger guys who is lots on them that don't wear them at all. Take if for what its worth, a great accomplishment. I think older guys wear them to let you know what they once were. Young guy don't have to do that there reputation a lot of times precedes them. I personally have never shot a 300 but I have shot a couple of 299's I wear both rings but not on the same hand and I don't wear them when I bowl in league. I will wear my 300 ring proudly after I get, and I will get it.

Sawbones – That reminds me of a story. I was bowling in a tournament in the 70’s and the lanes were tougher than boot leather. A team bowling next to us were all sporting shirts that had 700 patches on them and they all averaged over 190. As you know at that time not that common to shoot 700 and 190 was a pretty sporty average,  but they really didn’t look very good.

Well 3 of the guys didn’t break 500 and a fourth barely did. A crusty old local was writing down the scores after they finished up the 3rd game and I overheard him say to them “Where did you get those 700 patches sonny, In a cracker jack box!”.  I just about fell over from laughing so hard.

There is a local pro that has 454, 300 games, supposedly legit. You imagine? hell he could outfit 2 or 3 bowling alleys with rings LOL.

Anyway, if it makes you proud to wear one, wear it. Dont let the world tell you how to live your life.

As well, if you make fun of a guy that wears one, you shouldnt wear your ego so cheap, there is probaly a reason the guy is wearing it, ask.

Good friends Dad still wears one, gold, his wife got it for him, cause she was proud of him for bowling the 300. I imagine thats why he still wears it, probaly forgot what it really was for.

All i'm trying to say is, there is usually more to things than surface streets.

I do not believe that at all.. Bob Learn JR has the record I beleive..

454 is very hard to beleive. I would want to see documented proof of that..

I'd *love* to have a 300 ring to wear.  However, I never seem to be able to bid high enough to win one on eBay.

Most people at my local alley will wear their first 300 ring, I think because the first one is the sweetest one.  I actually know a guy who wears his 299 ring & keeps the 300 ring on display at his house.

If I'm ever fortunate enough to throw a 300 I will definately wear it.  Thought I had one monday night throwing the first 7 (seventh one was the grossest brooklyn strike I'd ever seen) then 7 pin, 10 pin, 2 strikes & another 10 pin.  Close, but not close enough

Maybe someday that Big 'B' will learn how to knock down that little 10 pin!
