When do you accept ...
« on: June 08, 2008, 03:11:42 PM »
that you have reached your peak and will not get any better?  This was sparked by the post about still wanting a 300 if you never had one before.  I am curious, is there a point where you just decide "this is it, no matter how much coaching, practice, or whatever things will not change"?  If there is, how do you know when you have reached that point?  Also if there is, then do you continue to practice between leagues to maintain that level or stop practice?

Thanks for reading and I look forward to the replies.

I might have reached my peak time to be at my best, many moons ago but there is alot of improvement that can go on....and that's why I bowl!  If we played a pin ball machine and never lost how long would you play.  Bowling is about adjusting towards your surroundings, some good, some bad.  I like the defeats as much as the wins because of the info that goes with it.

if you don't accept that you will never get any better will still get better. Its mental once you beleive you will never be any better then you won't if you think you can be better you will get better.

Never, ever, give up!Believe in yourself and in your ability to improve. It very well may happen when you least expect it.I really believe that some want it so bad,it gets in the way of proper execution. Some of my best games and sets have come when I really didn't expect to do anything fantastic. There really seems to be something to the psychology of "you can want it too much".

I second that opinion.

I am in that place right now myself.  I have yet to cash in a regional, and next month am bowling 3 in 3 consecutive weeks.  If I can cash in one of those at least, I can feel pretty good about that.  0 for 3? well, that will cause some serious soul serarching I think.  I'm trying to be as prepared as I can be for those tournaments, and hopefully, will break through in one of them at least.  I know I can compete on tougher shots, but I always seem to struggle through a bad stretch or two in the block, and it holds me back.  Hoping for the best, and we'll see how it goes.  Great post.

Very good reply, and that's simply true. To become a better player, one needs IMHO outside help, and the willingness to improve and change things. I am at such a point right now, where I need "professional help". Otherwise I will probably stick in the 180ies average, have some good series, but lack consistency.

I am still willing to improve, because I know and see (from time to time) the potential that is still untapped. Still "hungry"

Besides, practice is never wrong - if you have an objective.

You don't, period. But better is such a general term. Do you want to have a better average, be a better teammate, be a better spare shooter? Bowling shouldn't be defined strictly by the average you carry as it tells nothing about the person themselves.

While anyone, ANYONE, can get better you still have to look at the balance in your life.

What is it worth to you?

Within a given amount of finances, time, and talent you will plateau in ability. Without significant infusion of those assets you will not get any better.

If you have reached those limits then you will have to come to grips with the fact you will not get any better.

That is not to say on a given game, night, or session you might not post personal all time highs or perform at higher levels than you have before. But in the long haul your game will stagnate but in my mind that is not necessarily a bad thing. Enjoy what you have.

Every time I stand up on that ally to bowl .. I hope to get better! Some times I throw that GREAT game .. other times I just can't get the ball to react the way I expect it too. As long as I learned from that BAD GAME .. I'm improving! If I go 5 points over my average for a set .. I'm getting better. When I'm 50 under for a set .. I have to figure what I did wrong .. all this helps me to go back and back and back ....

I have several friends who are in their 60s who regularly beat younger guys.  I think you can at least "maintain" the physical part of the game, with workouts or just regular exercise, but the mental side doesn't have to suffer until we give up.

Today's equipment has allowed us to compete longer than ever if we stay sharp mentally and incorporate smart practice sessions periodically.

On a side note, if coaching isn't getting you better, then you may look into a different coach(es). Sometimes it has nothing to do with the coach's knowledge and ability, but whether or not he/she can convey that information in way that it "clicks" for the bowler. I've had several friends try to explain one aspect of the game to me for years, but one day one of them put it in a way that it just made sense to me and now I can remember it.

The only time you will stop getting better is when your health will not allow it and even then it is only physically.  You can still improve yourself mentally.

Honestly, I can't sat I've reached my peak avergae wise because I know I can average 207 for a season, That means 210+ is only a spare away. However, I know my limitations for attempting regional events and perhaps sport shot/pba condition tournaments. I'm a decent house shot hero with skill to be better.

Ken,

You are in the Reality Zone!

One does not have to give up but Pinbuster said it well.  How much time, money and effort are you going to spend to get better?  Most are not in that realm.  Reality set in.

I find myself spending more time, money and effort to become a better golfer than a bowler.  Golf is just way more fun and vexing to conquer.
