When do you call for a re-rack?
« on: October 13, 2009, 11:35:02 PM »
What constitutes a bad rack, i.e. one that lowers your chances to carry?  IMO, the pin that stands out is the three.  If the three pin is slightly off spot to the right, you have a greater chance of putting it in front of the ten.  Personally, I don't re-rack unless I have an 800 going and even then I'd probably just adjust light or heavy.

Is the anything else to look for?  I've seen people re-rack in league and I have no idea what they are seeing.

I look for 10 pins.

Unless a pin is missing or grossly off spot ( at least 2 inches) I don't re-rack.

The funny thing is that most of the re-racks I have seen in league the bowlers doesn't strike anyway.

Let's see some reasons to re-rack:

A Pin off spot.
A Missing pin.
A Slight delay to compose yourself.
A little gamesmanship to throw off the competition. (Like to throw off their rhythm).

Aside from re-racking for missing pins, I think I've re-racked for off-spot pins maybe twice in the past year in league.  One of those times was a couple weeks ago actually when the two pin was so horribly off-spot there was no way I could have carried anything resembling a normal shot.  A slightly off-spot pin usually doesn't bother me at all, and at worst I'll just make a slight speed adjustment or something to compensate.

Here's a follow-up for you.  I'm bowling Tuesday and have the front 7 at a house I have yet to shoot a sanctioned 300.  8th frame the 3 pin is slightly off spot to the right.  I notice this, but don't want to seem like a prima donna and decide to let it go and just make sure I get it to the dry so the ball finishes hard.  The shot I made was good, but sure enough the 3 goes in front of the 10.  Maybe I'm seeing my shot with rose-colored glasses, but I threw to the same spot in the 10th with a good looking rack and struck.  We ended up barely winning the game, but I can't help but want that shot back so I could take the re-rack.

Can't change the past and you will never know that even if you took the re-rack if you would have struck.  You won the game and shot a good score just enjoy it.

During league play the ONLY time I will re-rack is if there is a pin missing.

If it ever gets to where I need to "compose myself" on a house shot I'd better re-think my mental game... That's what the time is for between frames, right?

Yes.  On a normal, right-handed pocket hit, the three goes into the 6 then the 10.  Too often, when the 3 is off spot right, it deflects off of the 6 in front of the ten and into the flat gutter.

I don't re-rack in league unless I'm missing a pin or if a pin is really off.  Other than that, I take my chances.

If someone re-racks in a league, they take it way too seriously and should really rethink their mental game.

Re-rack only missing pins.  Then again, I'm out there having fun.  I don't think my eyes are good enough to be able to tell if a pin is slightly off spot.  At the house I bowl at, I wouldn't doubt that pins are slightly off quite often.  There are always mechanical issues.

Occasional bad racks are more often a result of bad bottom pins than mechanical equipment.  If there is something mechanically wrong, then every rack should be bad and re-racking isn't going to help,

This is kinda my reason for posting. I have cited one instance when re-racking increases your carry percentage substantially.  I'm looking for others because I see it too much and fail to see the reasoning behind it.

I've only gotten a rerack if a pin is severely off spot, or obviously if I'm missing a pin.

That makes sense.  I remember last year there was always one pin that looked to be leaning in one direction.  I never actaully came across it when I was up on the approach, but I'd see it from time to time.  I figured the bottom of the pin was damaged but I don't think anyone ever said anything about it or re-racked when it was out there.
