When does a bowler have too much equipment?
« on: May 06, 2008, 04:44:28 PM »
I have bowled in a true recreational league this year. Tonight was our last night (finally), and I saw something I've never seen before.

A woman started bowling last year, and booked 83. This year she finished with 100. Great improvement - no question. And she really enjoys herself. She has a 1 step approach, and throws the ball lefty .

She uses one ball for the strike ball (a 10 or 11 pound plastic Maxim), and another ball for her spares (a Vis-A-Ball).

Who in the world sold her those balls? And why????

Wow.

If it matters - hubby averages 123.

It depends on which order she bought the balls I suppose. If the got the maxim first, she probably got the vis-a-ball because she likes it and figures that she's got two balls she may as well use both. Does she know there's no real difference between them?
I'm a great believer in people getting their own equipment as soon as possible (although just the one ball, usually) I think that bowling with house balls for more than a couple of months is going to massively reduce any chance you ever had of using good technique.

Good Luck to her I say, as long as she enjoys it and can afford it

I have a 3-ball bag.  I carry my 3 main strike balls in there, and my spare ball.  Honestly, in league I just use one of the strike balls because in a 3-game set on fresh oil I can stay with the same ball and move only 2 boards max.  One of those balls I never use on fresh oil because it's a polished ball and I won't get enough reaction out of it since we have a 39-40 foot Medium-Heavy THS.  The over/under on it is pretty bad too so I use it more in practice or shorter patterns where I'm guaranteed enough movement.  I have another strike ball that's a pound lighter but I only take it to tournaments in case they put a pattern down that calls for it.

Mumzie -
To answer the question in the title of the post:

There are 3 times when a bowler has too much equipment ...
1.) When the spouse complains.
2.) When you physically run out of space for all of your bowling supplies and equipment.
3.) When you go broke buying bowling supplies and equipment.

When a bowler arrives at the bowling center and is completely "winded" from lugging all his equipment from his/her car and doesn't have enough energy to bowl the first game.

THS and almost always the same house: Two balls are enough... on strong and one weak... plus spareball

when you wander and get to see more different patterns imho three to four balls should do plus spareball if needed.

I carry a 2+1 arsenal meaning 2 reactives plus my XXXL as spare/dry lane ball.

for it is enough.

But I know the guys that come with their 4 ball roller to house leageu... take out every ball... but all of them all over the place so you cannot sit anywhere anymore... and when they play all of them (of course they do!) all roll equal as all are drilled to roll this way.

its like they play the same ball just in another color... ROFL

i have 8 balls right now.  2 of them are not fitted for me yet.  i only bring 4 balls to league and one is plastic.  heavy oiler, burnt-dry lanes, and something with backend, plus my plastic spare.  sometimes going to different houses or tournaments i might switch out one or two of them.  i never bring more than four, just kind of constantly rotate them out if needed.

When does a bowler have too much equipment?

When said bowler doesn't know how to use any of them.  That means you could have 100 and provided you also have a clue, thats fine.  But, if a bowler has 2 and scare the same spot twice on the lane then that bowler has too many.

We have a guy that brings 6 to league.  I bring 3(including plastic) and usually use 1, but occasionally use the alternate.  Every once in awhile I just bring plastic and use it.

From the bowler's perspective, that's when he has too many.  Might be two or three balls, might be 10 balls.  Tommy Jones might be able to keep up with which of 15 balls (probably 15 of the same thing, too) is appropriate, I can't.

From the non-bowler's (especially spouse's) perspective, I think Dan's got it.

I have 8 that I travel with. On my Friday night THS I bring 4. 2 solid reactives drilled different, a pearl particle and spare. Our shot is fairly heavy and depending on which team you bowl determines our carry down. The rest I take to Travel League or Tournaments where I don't know what I am going to bowl on or where I know that there is going to be significant break down in the 2nd or 3rd shifts.

When they bring six to the same house they've bowled at for 3+ years with little to no change in pattern for as THS league.

4 is almost too many.

It depends on the bowler, you have to know and understand your equipment.  If you have to think too hard on which ball to use, you probably have too many.  Usually for a THS league, I'll bring 4 because I have a 4-ball bag and most weeks I use just 1 or 2 of them.  The other ones are there for a just in case scenario.  For the PBA experience league on new Pro Anvilane that I'm bowling this summer, I'll probably bring more until I figure out which ones are going to work on the patterns.

When you don't understand all your equipment you have too much.

If you show up with 8 balls, and you know exactly what each of the 8 balls does, and exactly what each little difference in the ball makes, then its fine. If you can do that with 20 balls its fine.

When a woman who has a 100 average, has a Maxim for strikes, and Vis-A-Ball for spares, thats too many as IIRC not only do neither of them have a real core like the XXXL, but she would not be good enough to understand the difference anyway.
