When is it too much?
« on: May 18, 2012, 01:57:25 AM »
Owning bowling balls....

I admit, even though I bowl at different houses, do several tourneys a year, and do sport league.... I own too many balls.

When I played golf a lot, 3 to 4 times a week, I had three sets of irons.... TM R7s, and Adams RPM's, old blades, 4 pairs of shoes, and two different bags..(never broke 11) and I still sucked at golf..but only one putter and TM drivers...and cleveland wedges (which I sold)

I think I'm a low grade "hoarder"....

I think owning these much balls is not necessary for me. But, I buy balls anyway...

If you start buying balls because of the color and to match your outfit, then it may be too much.  Nobody wants to become the Imelda Marcos of bowling balls

It is too much when, like any addict, you figure out you have a problem.  The problem is you think you can buy a game in a box instead of improving your physical and mental game.  You proved this with your golf experience.  You thought the club was the answer.  It wasn't, was it?
Long Gone also posts the honest truth which is why i respect him. He posts these things knowing some may not like it.

Realizing you have a problem is the first step to recovery.  ;)

Went through the same thing as you man; had like 20+ balls at one point and part of it was thinking that I was going to get this magic ball that was going to outhook and outperform everyone else's ball...then I realized I had way too many bowling balls and I donated them to the youth leagues. So I guess with you it all depends on how many bowling balls you've accrued...unless you've lost count?

LOL I've spent money on coaches.. check profile..I'm just not as good as you... my golf pro, I had him for three years. went from 31 to 12...then focused on career..plus, blades were passed down except for R7's....the RPM I won raffle at a tourney....

I used to get balls at prices waaayy below Joe Bowler gets'em.  some were given free/gifts nib... the ones I buy now..I buy'em cause I can...

I even get one bowling shoe free, but missing the other pair. lol ask tenpinspro ....

these balls I give away to newbies or the youth bowlers. owning a dozen is an addiction though...

With coverstocks constantly evolving, there's always something new to try. Oils are changing as well, If you strive to improve and or keep learning, trying different equipment is just part of the process.

All kinds of collectors, shoes, cars, spoons, art, autographs, the list goes on, having a passion about something isn't bad as long as you're not hurting anyone imo.

It becomes too much when you realize that the next you ball you buy does not fill a gap in your arsenal. But getting to this point can take a long time, and actually knowing the equipment you have in store. I sometimes have the impression that "ball whores" to not care about this aspect at all, just punching up the next ball that "hooks more" or might yield that accidental 300 game which makes this orb the best thing since sliced bread.

Personally, I'll admit that I used to buy a lot of balls - too many than actually needed - but it had the poistive side effect of getting to know different manufacturers and ball ball concepts. Even though I consider owning more than 10 balls for a hobby bowler like me ridiculous, that "phase" made me wiser and more knowledgeable as a player.

Today I'd say that a full arsenal can be made from 5 or six balls, and then you can cover anything, with some overlap and potentially different reaction shapes. Just getting there is a tedious task, with some trail and error, and pointlessly punched holes.
Besides, I find less and less new equipment to try, which is also a budget problem - a high end ball, ready to roll, costs about US$350 here. I am rather looking for the ball that actually fits to my needs than falling for the "oh, goes even longer AND harder than last year's killer ball" delusion (see above). The romance is gone...
